Spiculated nodule in my limgula

Posted by maryk02171 @maryk02171, Aug 14 1:34pm

Hi everyone, they found a 15mm spiculated nodule in my limgula during a lung screening scan. It states suspicious for malignancy. I'm waiting on my doctor to explain it all. Does this mean I have lung cancer how do they finalize that it is lung cancer. Id appreciate any feedback.

hi @maryk02171 - sorry to hear about your suspicious nodule. Usually doctors will recommend a biopsy (either needle biopsy or bronchoscopy - depending on the location of the nodule) as a next step. Most lung nodules are benign, but a spiculated shape is more concerning for malignancy. Remember, it's not cancer until a biopsy proves that it is. Are you having any symptoms? What led to you getting imaging done?

Will a biopsy show what stage if it's cancer?

There are other conditions that can cause spiculations. Only a biopsy can confirm cancer. A biopsy cannot tell you the stage, it can tell you how aggressive the cancer might be.

If a biopsy confirms cancer there will be a PET scan of the body (eyes to thighs) and an MRI of the brain to look for metastases. At the time of a biopsy, a piece of the tissue will be sent to biomarker screening. The biomarker tells them where in the DNA the cell broke down to form cancer. Some cancers have markers that allow them to have pills or tablets rather than surgery or chemo.

I see a pulmonologist tomorrow.

REPLY

Hi, Can you please keep me posted on your journey. I just received almost identical news. I see the pulmonologist this Tuesday, 9/2. My nodule was found on a CT scan from my heart condition, so my cardiologist gave me the news and has sent me to the pulmonary doctor.

Hello @jimdaytona, I hope the appointment with the pulmonologist was informative. Did you come away from that with any answers, or more tests to be completed?
