small red blotches on skin

Posted by kerrywp @kerrywp, Jul 24, 2025

Hi,
Has anyone had small red blotches randomly appear on your legs or arms?
Flat, not raised and doesn't itch. I think it is a side effect from prednisone but my rheumatologists say they have not seen that. I finally decided it was benign and I have just ignored it. But thought I would ask all of you.
Thanks!!

Thanks for sharing how you handle these annoying red blotches. I will start Cerave. Can you tell me how you make your collagen smoothie. Thank you.

My recipe is similar to Kerrywps. I also use one or two scoops of collagen and protein powders. Then my favorites are kale, pineapple, blueberries and some kefir. Which is fermented milk made from grains. I am also working on gut health so all these things are good. Chia seeds as well. Pretty tasty too!

I have been on Prednisone for a year now tapering from 15 mg to 5 now and hoping to taper off.
Yes lately I have all these skin things , marks like a bruise ( like your picture ) red dots etc

thought it was prednisone. but really not sure checking with doctor...:-(

It was weird to me that the red blots and some blood blisters just started about 4 months ago. I’ve been on these meds for two and 1/2 years. So I guess I’ve crossed the threshold of long term use. Soooo mannny weird things with PMR

I sent my dermatologist a pic…they are called purpora (sp?)
Yes they do go away. Like you waiting for them to leave and 🛑. I am 2 wks off prednisone and still on Kevzara, but notice they are less frequent. The ones on my face last much shorter. When I bump myself, seldom leave a mark now. Hang in there.

I've had these come and go all my life. Not sure what they are but when I'm regularly visiting a derm doctor, they're a lot more worried my lack of pigment (vitaligo) combined with lifetime sun exposure (Florida native). The dermatologists dismiss these.

Yes! I just started getting these on the back of my left hand. One goes away and another one comes.

I just saw my Rheumatologist yesterday. When I asked him what these spots were, without looking up he replied, “prednisone bruising”. Common with the use of prednisone. How about that! Not great news but we know what it is and we know that doctors do know too.
