small red blotches on skin
Hi,
Has anyone had small red blotches randomly appear on your legs or arms?
Flat, not raised and doesn't itch. I think it is a side effect from prednisone but my rheumatologists say they have not seen that. I finally decided it was benign and I have just ignored it. But thought I would ask all of you.
Thanks!!

Ahh so it’s prednisone that is killing my skin!! Yikes my hands & forearms have spots just like this. Mostly from any kind of bump or pressure on skin brings them up! Sometimes I wonder if I just stare/glare at my skin the spots appear!! I’m heartened to see that once off prednisone the skin may get more resilient!? I’m tapering down & now at 6 mgs. Then I guess I’ll still be on methotrexate. Anyway someone had suggested a cream to help w/fragile skin -DerMend. I can’t tell if it’s working but am trying it anyway.
Thanks for the post.
Prednisone definitely can cause easy bruising. I enjoy working in garden but my forearms always seem to have this bruising despite no recollection of any injuries. The skin on my forearms is also very fragile and tears so easily. I now wear " sleeves " when gardening and definitely help.

Absolutely ... Having worked in a hospital it was easy to recognize patients who were taking prednisone. Their skin was so thin that it would tear easily, bruise easily and have many problems with healing. Their bones were not any better and some patients would have "spontaneous" bone fractures. These patients would have visitors and the worry nurses would have was that the visitors would think the patient was being abused.
It wasn't always nurses being blamed for abuse. Often a family member would bring someone who was on prednisone into the hospital. Doctors and nurses might suspect the family member of abuse.
Despite sleeves this is what I have after a couple of hours of trimming bushes yesterday. ☹️. Currently on Kevzara and 9 mg prednisone. Also on Eliquis for aFib but never had this before prednisone. At least no cuts in fragile skin.
Hi barracuda,
Mine started immediately from Kevzara injection plus 2 more skin cancers. The steroids cause thinning skin..mine from prednisone for 7 years.
Good luck!
Just a thought...after taking Leflunomide for PMR relief I suffered liver damage. One symptom was red blotches. They were paler and very prevalent on my chest and belly. I had very itchy skin. Probably not your condition but just in case you might need your liver checked
Thanks for sharing how you handle these annoying red blotches. I will start Cerave. Can you tell me how you make your collagen smoothie. Thank you.
What is the name of the blood test to check on the liver? Maybe I have had it checked and don't know it!!
Thanks!
Hi,
Not sure who mentioned the collagen smoothie - but I just started making smoothies again this week.
Decided I cannot go full on AIP Wahls protocol - but have significantly upped my veggie count - and reduced my grains. I use oatmilk in my tea but may look for an alternative.
Getting healthy is expensive!!
My general smoothie is (depending on how your gut handles raw vegetables)
2-3 cups raw kale
1.5 cups Moola Banana milk (relatively low carb)
1 scoop Protein Powder
1 scoop Collagen Powder
1 cup raw blueberries
I threw in a couple of beets, a carrot stick and some celery to boot.
Good luck!!
