Small indeterminate kidney lesion - Very Nervous

Posted by am1974 @am1974, Nov 14, 2023

Hello All: I am new here. Just had Abdominal CT Sscan due to right side cramp/discomfort and it found a 11mm indeterminate lesion on right kidney. I am in the process of getting an MRI as recommended by the reading radiologist. I am very nervous and just wanted to know your thoughts or any helpful guidance or insight. Thank you so much in advance.

@abbigail89 You need a physician team! Are you within driving distance of Mayo? They are interdisciplinary team oriented and refer to each other for patient benefit.
Did you get your aorta tear repaired? I hope so!
Do you have a ppo insurance that allows you to self refer or do you have to go through your primary for their referral.? If a PPO, go to Healthgrades.com and find a doctor that specializes in kidneys, etc. then, look at their ratings a patient reviews. That will help you find a doctor. If you have to go through your PCP ( primary) be the squeaky wheel that gets greased!

@susanris I haven’t gotten that repaired yet they are playing the wait and see what happens game it’s been a year. Is how it feels honestly. I’m located in Michigan but Mayo Clinic is an 8 hour drive. Not too bad honestly. I feel like these drs don’t really care. A few years ago things would have been so different. Everything would have been taken care of by now.

@abbigail89 Mayo has housing. I would do the 8 hour drive or get there however you can. They left a torn aorta? Waiting for ???
How old are you, may I ask? I am a complicated patient and go to Mayo in Jacksonville and would go nowhere else.
You need a team of doctors more than a bunch of siloed specialists I do believe!

@susanris I would a thousand percent make the drive knowing that everything would be taken care of and I don’t have to worry about it anymore. I was told by a vascular surgeon when it was found that it’s not life threatening enough to be taken care of. He told me come back to them when it ruptures. When I went to u of m I figured they would see it and take care of it. They told me the same thing they will wait till the tear gets bigger or ruptures which ever occurs first. Like what you guys are wanting to play god with my life is how I take it. Waiting for it to become a life threatening emergency is just mind blowing in my eyes. I’m 36. The first doctor I saw said it’s only in your abdomen your left kidney is safe for now. And just walked away didn’t answer a single question like umm what.

Unless you have a small aortic bulge, a tear is fixed. Waiting until it ruptures is a fatal event! If you have insurance other than Medicare Advantage ( Mayo does not take it), You should get your most caring dr to refer you and make the drive!

So I did get my results from my mri scan but they are different then what the ct showed it doesn’t make sense. So there for which test would be correct. One says the masses are in the right kidney while the other says they are in both. One says mass one says cysts. I just don’t want them to completely ignore me either. Clearly it’s something going on. I just know that when I go for my appointment they are just going to ignore am. Say something ignorant like last time.

@susanris I can’t get my dr to even listen to anything I have to say. I know the scan calls it a dissection and aneurysm. I just feel like there is a lot happening and they are even caring what I have to say at all or what to even give me a little relief to say it’s something or it’s nothing. That’s what I was saying to them is waiting to rupture is just signing my death certificate honestly. Because you only have minutes to get to a hospital if that ruptures along with what if it happens a while I’m sleeping. Finding a caring doctor is near impossible.

@abbigail89 you have a dissecting aneurysm and a thoracic surgeon is the one for the job. Is it an insurance issue? You need to be treated before a rupture which can usually be a fatal event. Keep looking for a doctor outside your immediate area of care! Your life depends on it. Maybe that Mayo Clinic trip isn’t such a bad idea!

@susanris that’s what I was going to do this week. With the issues with the kidneys and the dissection I think it’s really important. It’s located at the left kidney from what they said at the branch of arteries to the left kidney. I just don’t know why they would blow something off that could not only be fatal but eventually cause damage to the left kidney. I was telling my boyfriend I was just going to ignore it all. Since I’m being blown off. Because the kidney issues and the dissection issue. It’s just a lot and really overwhelming when no one will listen. I know U of M vascular surgery called me one morning. But I didn’t know it was them and didn’t answer.

Like you, I've had both ct and mri scans. It's so confusing because sometimes they refer to something as a cyst and then something else is a tumor. I think there is a tumor in my left kidney and cysts in the right one. My kidney surgeon said the mri is the more accurate and detailed imaging. My tumor has grown another mm and is now 1.7 cm. I see the surgeon next week to get surgery scheduled. I'm still not sure whether to do surgery or the frozen procedure.
