SIBO and Rapid Gastric Emptying or Dumping Syndrome

Posted by dheavner @dheavner, Dec 24, 2019

Does anyone els have these 2 diagnoses together?
I read more about gastropheris accompanied with SIBO.
I am 9 months into this sickness triggered by food /water poisoning in Mexico. I have done 4 rounds of antibiotics and am finally seeing a GI motility specialist, and also looking at Mayo if she cannot help me.
Anyone with similar diagnoses with advice on what has helped them. I have lost 70 pounds, constant nausea even with Zofran, dizziness and sugar drops after eating, constipation and just feel terrible.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Are there any others who suffer from dumping/rapid gastric emptying without having gastric bypass ?
I follow dietary restrictions..no added sugar including fruits and lay down after eating and take ascarbose with meals to prevent blood sugar drops.
I had a fundoplication surgery in 2013 but don’t see how this could trigger this now. I had a infection from food or water 10 months ago in Mexico. That started many problems including post infectious IBS, SIBO and the dumping.
Everything I read says dumping usually resolves a n a few months.
I am interested in experience others have had treating dumping.

Hi @dheavner, I'd like to bring @konniehoover @fourof5zs @faithann64 @azcyclist2018 @sickvick @downtowntiger and @claytamos into this discussion as they have had experience with gastric dumping.

You mention that you had fundoplication surgery in 2013, but that they gastric emptying/dumping only started recently, perhaps triggered by food poisoning 10 months ago. I can't imagine losing 70 pounds. What treatments have you tried? Has anything helped?

Have you been tested for c.dif and h.pylori? Those are both infections that could cause the dumping. I would ask for your stool to be tested. I had fundoplication surgery which in me caused the opposite, I had delayed gastric emptying. I would ask for the stool test mentioned to rule those out.

I had a endoscopy in May and no H.pylori. I have a appointment with a motility specialist this week and will ask for stool testing for c diff, thanks for your reply!

I would still ask for h.pylori in the stool test. They told me the same once, that I didn't have it but when I had the stool test it was found. Easy to check for if they're already checking for c.dif in stool.

I'm just following these this thread to learn, and find it very interesting to not have H pylori from endoscopy biopsy yet have it in the stool (I assume it shouldn't be there). I know c. diff causes diarrhea (I am told), did the h. pylori cause that problem? What is gastric dumping (I'm kind of assuming emptying stomach contents too quickly? Is this something a person feel symptomatically?

In general, in listening to a lot of stories, it seems the GI world is still in it's infancy as far as diagnosing and treating most chronic problems people have.

I had h.pylori in my intestines. The endoscopy biopsy wasn't taken in the intestines. Yes, I had bad diarrhea. I was told the stool test is best for both c.dif and h.pylori.

Gastric dumping is diagnosed by a gastric emptying study where you eat a egg with radioactive properties and toast and they do a ultrasound over the course of 2-4 hours. It diagnoses slow emptying too.
The doctors thought I had slow emptying so it was a surprise as I don’t have bypass surgery. The symptoms are terrible.. I get dizzy and lightheaded after eating and have to lay flat after meals. Nausea and burping, blood sugar drops(using ascarbose and not diabetic either).
I agree that there is much to research and learn to help all of the complicated cases we read about.
I am going to Mayo 3/17 to see a motility Clinic doctor and cannot wait to get help!

Dumping and delayed (slow) gastric emptying are complete opposite. Dumping is when your food leaves your stomach too quickly causing diarrhea and delayed gastric emptying is your food sits in your stomach too long and usually causes constipation. H.pylori and c.dif can cause the same symptoms as dumping. I've had both those and usually get treated with antibiotics. I had h.pylori that the antibiotics didn't work on. I ended up doing a natural supplement regimen that took about 90 days to get rid of it.
