Showering while traveling

Posted by pled @pled, Nov 16, 2023

When traveling, what do you look for to determine if it seems safe to take a shower in your hotel? I'm hesitant to do it, but sometimes you just can't go any longer. Is there a stream type that is better or worse regarding chance of re-infection? Any other factors you look for?

Yes, it looked expensive and complicated as far as installation and upkeep. Also looking for one that will screw into the already installed pipe in my shower. There is one recommended in a picture on some NJH info but I haven't been able to locate one to purchase (or the price) yet. The one recommended by NJH kind of pours water out of the head similar to a faucet instead of a spray. Have you seen it?

What about just disinfecting original one monthly? Bag of vinegar tied on to soak? Thoughts?

I’d think steam types are worse for inhalation, vs cold showers no vapor?

Sorry I don't know much of anything about the Pall filter except that it looked quite expensive, so that ruled it out for me. I'm trying to find other options. Hopefully, others will see this post and have some info to add.

I am wondering if the all-metal showerhead I purchased (which I remove and boil in hot water every 1-2 weeks; not showering every day) is a safer option. I read that another person with Bronchiectasis does this, but I don't know if it's scientifically-shown to reduce exposure.
Perhaps in a hotel, the "in a pinch" trick of taking a bag with vinegar and wrapping it with rubber bands around the shower head to try and sterilize it is an idea.

Here are some ideas you might want to consider...
First, at home, get your system tested for NTM - if there is none present, breathe a sigh of relief, and feel free to shower. Second, turn your water heater up to 134F or hotter - NTM cannot survive. Let it run a minute or more at the hottest, then modify the temp and shower without worry.
On the road - think about how often you travel - if it is a rare event for you, run the shower full-hot for a minute or two, then take a quick shower, fan on & door open to minimize your exposure.

Remember, everyday life exposes you to NTM everywhere. You can only avoid it by living in a bubble. If you are like me, that is not living. So...the idea is to minimize risks - a short shower with the fan on & door open...maybe a bath if that is an option.
