Should a Dexa Scan be fone right after the course of Evrnity completes
After my 12 injections of Evenity completes, when should the DEXA Scan be done? My bone specialist wanted to do it right after I was done with my 12 Evenity injections. My rheumatologist wants me to have my next DEXA scan 2 years after the last one. My last Evenity injection is around Jan. 26, 2027. Two years from my last DEXA scan would be around July 25, 2027. I plan to do Reclast after Evenity. Isn’t it better to have a DEXA scan in Feb. and not end of July? I am questioning if the rheumatologist knows what she is doing. After my Evenity treatment is over, I am thinking of possibly switching back to the bone specialist even though I don’t like the extra hospital facility charges that gets tacked on when I see her at the clinic in the hospital.

@jeanvarney Thank you for these details. I just received Shot #10 of Evenity. He wants me to go on Prolia when I'm done. I wanted to talk about possible side effects and what is the 'plan'...I feel like I'm only getting the information as it comes up (take this; now this; now this) without a plan or strategy. I've seen many reports of side=effects with Prolia so was curious about your experience on Reclast.
@debhatchell - I can't speak for Prolia, but as I mentioned in my previous post. I had no long term issues with Reclast. Good luck!
Your logic about when to do a DXA scan is correct - who knows what the heck your doctor is thinking. Perhaps their thinking is based on getting insurance payments. Whatever it is based on it's not based on what's best for you. You do not have to have great knowledge of osteoporosis medications to reason this correctly. In almost any area of medicine or anything else it's best to test / evaluate results after you complete something.
If you don't evaluate shortly after completing Evenity you will not know the true effect of Evenity. Some doctors will even have patients do 1 year of Evenity and then 1 year of another med and only then doing a DXA. Just nuts, as you do not know what benefit (or lack of benefit) you got from each of the drugs.
Test, scan, evaluate both before and after in order to be able to make the best decisions afterwards.

4 Reactions@debhatchell That's correct. I did the Reclast infusion one month after my 12th and final Evenity injection.
@naturegirl5 I am doing the same. Finished Evenity, waited one month and had repeat Dena scan and will start Reclast the week.

1 Reaction@debhatchell my endocrinologist at UCLA, who is an expert in osteoporosis, won’t even use Prolia because once you go on it, you can never go off of it

@jgmmsw after one year of of Evenity and improvement in my DEXA scan he’s recommending Reclast. To me the biggest benefit of that is that I might not need it every year depending on my bone markers one can even go three years before the next infusion.
@jgmmsw Well, one CAN go off Prolia, but not cold Turkey. You have to transition to a bisphosphonate. I personally don't want to take Prolia either, but I felt I should clarify this point.
