Shocked by aging process

Posted by seniormiz @seniormiz, Jan 25 8:54am

My fingernails and toenails stopped growing and just keep breaking off. My hair is falling out. My memory is not as sharp and sometimes I feel a little woozy. I hate this. I want my body and my senses back.

@lacy2 I think that is wonderful! As long as you have a happy marriage and neither partner develops dementia, you are lucky indeed! What ever traits you don't like in each other grow large with dementia.

@raebaby whatever traits a person has throughout their life, good ones can also be amplified with dementia…i have seen that !

@nycmusic My sweet Mother, who I cared for the last five years of her life [Alzheimer's and Lewy Body simultaneously] remained as graceful and loving as she had been all our lives. I did a lot of volunteer work during those years and fell in love with many of the residents in Memory Care where Mother lived ... all of them funny a lot of the time and endearing.

@nycmusic I 'm sure you are right. My relative who was a narcissist and"fake" became a nice person to be around when she developed alzheimers.

@lacy2 My life has been great. good kids, all 4 graduated from college and have great families I was just thinkng about how when my mother was 6 years old in Chicago in the 1920's, time of the gangsters; she was standing in front of a candy store and a bullet whizzed by her head so close she felt the breeze from it. All I've been alive to enjoy could have never happened.

I really understand how you feel. It' s so stressful. My husband died a short time before I had the breast cancer treatment.
I found that coloring intricate coloring books with gel pens helped save my sanity from the stress. The ink flowed while he raged around me. It put me in kind of a zen state.
We went to the Parkinson's support group but it was also distressing seeing that there was never a satisfactory outcome.
If you ever want to know what is "normal" in Parknson's as the time goes on, I'm here .

It took me more than once, but at age 48 I finally married Mr right ! We've been married 15 great years.
My only regret is that I married with such low standards before, no regrets leaving the exes! Be alone and be happy or with someone who is also a generally happy person.

@raebaby Love it! You are a hero. I am the caretaker of a 70 year old husband who thinks he needs a mother. Am sick of it and I filed for divorce. Life is too short to be miserable another minute.

He told me he was "tired" of me being sick and couldn't hack it anymore. Maybe he is what is making me sick....?

@slarson14 yes, I'm sure he gets on your nerves. And that could be making you sick.

I'm 84. I lost my husband of 58 years at age 79 who had Parknson's disease. I was his caretaker and miserable. Then I got breast cancer. I had chemo, radiation and a lumpectomy. I am fine now. I went through menopause around age 48. I felt horribly emotional at the time. I had HRT for a long time.
I got peripheral neruopathy in my feet from chemo and can't drive anymore,But you know what, I am now healthy and happy!
I live on 22 acres alone in beautiful Calif. My kids stop by to help me. I just got back from Cancun with my kids and from visiting a boyfriend in Texas who I went steady with in the 8th grade.
There is lots of life left to be lived and you can get healthier!
My goal now is to let my hair grow long and then dye it silver.

Hey there, Rae. Looks like you're doing great!
One thing that struck me was the 22 acres. Visited CA last year for the first time... and I was in a beautiful area. But with the size your property, it does sound like a ton of work to maintain... even for a much younger person! I presume you're getting a good deal of help.
All the best!

@larryg333 My son helps me a lot. He lkes to be out here with his dogs. He calls it his resort. I'm in wine country, near the Pacific ocean and it is so lovely. With all the oak trees, I can pretty much leave everything natural and not worry a lot about yard upkeep.
I have a trail cam that shows neat pictures of bob cats, coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions .Unless there is an earthquake, which I'm used to, it s quite peaceful. Best to you too! RaeAnn
