Shocked by aging process

Posted by seniormiz @seniormiz, Jan 25 8:54am

My fingernails and toenails stopped growing and just keep breaking off. My hair is falling out. My memory is not as sharp and sometimes I feel a little woozy. I hate this. I want my body and my senses back.

@dederickve I have a walking stick made from a Hawthorn tree with a Brass greyhound head for my hand...I love it because it was put together by a friend and the tree was in my yard...I say 'Walking Stick' because it sounds more positive than Cane(which implies unwellness)..I do need it for dizzyness and a sore knee...but I like to think of it as a "Fashion Statement" which is more fun and one feels less old...it makes people laugh and is a source of conversation.laughing is good1

@fromthehill I like the idea of your walking stick. We experienced a severe ice storm in northern michigan last march and we lost half of our trees. I saved some trunks to make something memorable and now I know what I will do. A beautiful walking stick! Thank you.

Hello, @rollingf. Lucky you! I had to watch Wolf Man alone. 🙂 My brother, 14 years older, was too sophisticated to want to bother watching movies about werewolves and vampires. Of all the old b&w movies shown on Zacherley's Shock Theater, the Wolf Man was my far and away favorite. As a lonely teenager, I'd watch as Chaney shape-shifted into a wolf and wish if only I could shape-shift into someone or something other than the boy I was. 🙂 Memories! Have a wonderful day, @rollingf. Cheers! –Ray (@ray666)

I ( age 68) was always hyper-focusing on every little gray hair and wrinkle, saggy loose skin and when I got my t-score for osteoporosis , I cried. My best mental and physical boost comes from helping my brother-in-law. He is alone after losing his wife ( my sister) from uterine cancer which she had been managing for 30 years . Her last words to me were, "There is more you can do." My husband and I had an important mission in helping my brother -in-law .Bringing him out of depression and giving him a reason to live put my focus where it should be. See your doctor or a podiatrist-this is something that can be helped ! Change your despair into something positive. You can handle this season of your life. " There is a time for every purpose under heaven." BLESSINGS !

Nothing like helping another in need….surviving cancer has made me want to do this very much….cherish what you have and share as much as you are able..the smile on the face of a very ill friend seems so special, beyond my humble words.

@sueinmn Thank you. My whole life has been a physical struggle because i have very low energy (epstein-barr positive but have not pursued a chronic fatigue diagnosis) and i have had untreatable depression since age 26, after my second child. The new meds out that do help me, cause tremors and i have to quit taking them. For most of my life, every big event has to be planned with rests and naps so i can attend. And keeping my fingers crossed that i can hold it together. I want to apologize that my attitude in the post may reflect this. Yes, when i have energy, i go out and socialize. Otherwise, i have many hobbies here at home and there is always READING!! Have a nice day. 🙂

@riverdawn Both my sister and I were diagnosed with all you mentioned in brackets in the same year yet live thousands of miles apart.
We both did vitamin supplements, no sugar and controlled the amount of carbohydrates that are high sugar.
We pulled ourselves out of it and yes there was some depression during that period of time.
Diet plays a role in so many illnesses.
Did you ever try the low carbohydrates, no sugar etc. at one time. It takes a great deal of discipline but worth it.

@rollingf Great memories! I too was the "babysitter" and often our friends' kids too.
And "joint" birthday parties - 3 some of my siblings and I had July birthdays (7th, 23rd, 24th & 25th) - not only a joint party, but one cake - I only got to choose the flavor every fourth year. I had a simple request for my sixteenth birthday - my own cake, to share with friends!

@sueinmn Funny how we don't think of the possible pluses and minus sometimes with what we wish for.
My Dad, sister, brother and I were all October and my Mother's baby brother who we lost in WWII was October. Recently I thought to myself, "Why didn't Mother think to have us all celebrate with a joint birthday 'party' and therefore we would have also celebrated Uncle Stanley with that celebration as a remembrance? Probably if she had we would have finally asked as you asked .....'my own cake.'
Again a bit of similarities with regard to our brother ..,....and then the birthdays...You all July...Me all October.
Babysit, ...yes did that also for my October born brother and sister who I would have shared the birthday cake with. They were/are to me my baby brother and sister.

picture is Zacherly. Gasport was his sidekick. He used to have a pile of spaghetti hanging down which he called Alan (payola) Freed's nerves. He also used to chop up a head of cauliflower which he called a brain.

Have had blood work done recently? You may not get your old body back, but perhaps this one can be tuned up. I am 82 and except for hair loss after my colostomy (it grew back curly!), I haven’t experienced your issues. Do check this out with your doc.
