Sharp pain big toe

Posted by Soledad02 @soledad02, Nov 9 10:49am

A few weeks ago I started noticing a pain at the end of my big toe. The pain goes away for a few days then returns. It's not irritated, not red. I thought maybe my walking shoes were too narrow. I bought a new pair in a wide. Last night the pain returned with a vengeance. The pain is just at the end of by left big toe, very sharp almost like having a needle injected in it. I tried Voltaren (arthritis cream), and also a compounded pain med my pain management doctor prescribed when I get pain in my heels (arthritis). Neither cream worked. Could this be arthritis, if so, what might work. If pain persists I'll see my podiatrist.

Neuropathy? Diabetic?

REPLY

@soledad02: The reason I asked about Diabetes is because my Neuropathy began with occasional sharp pains in my big toes… I referred them to “bee stings”. After many years of these stabbing pains in toes, feet, ankles, calf’s, shins and now thighs I am convinced I have Diabetic Neuropathy. You can experience Neuropathy for a lot of medical malady. I think of the stabbing pains as when the nerves are dying- I have no medical training as you can tell. I have a drawer of creams, lotions, lidocaine patches, socks to apply at these times (usually when I am solitary or trying to get to sleep at night), but I am convinced there is no cure. I take Tylenol with longer pain bouts. Sometimes a heating pad gives relief… sometimes an ice bag.
I don’t know if my saga will help you or not. However, now you know that I do understand the pain involved in this situation. Best health to you…

@dbamos1945 thanks for this information. I’m hoping it’s neither of these. I’ll reach out to my Dr in the near future if it continues. So you’re not finding any relief to the pain? I might try ibuprofen tonight before bed.

Did you ever look into gout? I get attacks every now and then in my big toe. Just a thought.

Schedule with the podiatrist and buy some lidocaine patches. Could be gout.

@closer0043 it’s crossed my mind. Did you see a doctor to get diagnosed? Dud you find anything that helped you?

I never did go to the doctor because my pain didn’t last that long and would go away for months. I just figured it was gout from symptoms. I think a blood test for uric acid levels will be the first step.

@closer0043
My former husband has gout. It affects the joint and not the tip of his toe. That’s where the Uric acid crystals form .
