Severe Flatulence

Posted by tonyabriscoe @tonyabriscoe, Dec 6, 2024

It’s been almost 3 years and a lot of wasted $$ since I had the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery and I still suffer from horrendous flatulence, with no help. My quality of life was suppose to improve after weight loss but it’s worse because of gas. I’ve even gone been seen by GASTRO and everything looked good so, I’m back at square one. This issue has taken over my life; it has destroyed intimacy with my husband. Most nights he doesn’t even share the same bed. I’m afraid to go out anymore because it’s so embarrassing to have my friends not want to be near me and I even gag from the smell of my own farts. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME; I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.

Welcome to Connect, sorry your having that terrible side effect.

I sometimes have problems with Excessive belching from eating too fast, wrong food or laying down right after eating. I was diagnosed with SIBO, Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. But that is an upper GI issue, yours sound more of lower GI problem. I treat SIBO with probiotics.

Found two articles that have recommendations, very similar:

What's behind smelly farts after surgery?

It is shame the GI provider had no solution.
Have you thought of trying probiotics or seeing a dietitian about what types of food to avoid?

Hi and thanks for your response. I had a full work up including a colonoscopy and everything was as it should be. I literally just started a probiotic and I’m meeting back up with my dietician shortly. I’m going into my second year of this and it’s ruining my experiences because it’s hard being present when worried about embarrassing flatulence.

Farts are made by gut bacteria, so I recommend having your gut biome evaluated. From a dietary perspective, eliminating air in food might be helpful-- whipped or foamed foods, leavened bread (anything with air holes like sourdough), etc.. If you're eating sugar free candies, those will definitely mess you up. Go without for a week to see if it helps. Anything containing allulose, chicory root fiber, or other sugar alcohols is a prime offender. Lastly, consider eliminating drinking straws. Sending best wishes-- sounds very frustrating!
