Severe Constipation

Posted by klk464 @klk464, Feb 28, 2018

I have had severe constipation for a long time. I drink lots of water and have had almost every test possible done and tried many prescription medications. These medications work for a little bit then stop. I currently take 3 docusate in morning and at night I will take 2 senna/docusate. I still dont have a daily BM. So i get bloated crampy and back pain from this.

I was told I could go to the Mayo Clinic as they may have ideas for me because they are out of options for me here.

Anyone else suffer from this?

Hi, @champ100. What surgery are they proposing for you? In what way(s) do you feel not ready for that?

Im pretty sure it's called the j-pouch? And also taking out the last few inches of my colon😬😬 im just going through alot of things medically so my brain cant even think about surgery. Also I have PG(pyoderma gangrenosum)from crohns so I wouldn't even be able to get any type of surgery even if I wanted too.

After many years of constipation..even hospitalized for it..I found Trulance ..(tried Linzess and Amtiza..didn't work at all) and if necessary Miralax at night.. I also take VSL3 Probiotics ..one every AM..and drink 2 Vanilla plant based ensures a day (sometimes just one).. fava pea fiber.. 5 grams each and eat 1 Thomas Multigrain English Muffin every day with plant butter.. 8 grams of fiber..and as much water as I can stand!! I hope this helps someone.. praying for everyone!! Jesus is our Healer!!!

Thank you for your input! Years ago I used to almost do the same thing w the Miralax and suppositories..I went more than just a few times a month but still not much more. I did it for about a year and then my drs changed and had me try something else. I cant even remember.. I'm not exaggerating when I say ive tried everything and have tried alot of things multiple times. ( hope this isn't too much info..) when I do have a BM it's like a big, rock hard ball. Its literally like cement lol. Im always impacted and look pregnant.. it suxks bc i literally have ppl ask me if im pregnant and I will get so embarrassed and run away and cry. Im almost getting used to getting asked that question now. Im definitely not ready for any surgery right now and have some other conditions caused from my crohns that im trying to work out. But thank you for your thoughts! Im always open to hearing anything

That's a really tough way to live. I used to see ads in which they mentioned people having impacted bowels, having twenty-five pounds of material collecting inside. I scoffed at the time. Listening to your travails makes me thinks perhaps the stories are true. Until a couple of years ago, my normal BM was fairly hard and compacted and took some effort to expel. When I started on Tramadol a few years ago, it became a little more difficult to go. But, when I developed peripheral neuropathy a year or so ago, I developed pretty bad constipation. I started drinking a lot more water recently and my movements became more manageable. I thought that my normal fluid intake of coffee, juice, etc was enough to keep me a regular guy but apparently not. It appears that the old adage of drinking lots of water is so very true. The fact that your stools are so hard and compacted seems to suggest that most of the water is being removed from your bowel. You must really struggle to pass all that material. It's a wonder you haven't developed hemorrhoids. Have you tried upping your water intake significantly? Keep on keeping on. Be your own best advocate. Don't give up!

Have you tried prune juice ? I’ve had 3 bowel surgeries and had constipation from this and they advised me to drink prune juice and it definitely gets things working.
