Hi there @brajoh,
When you get back from fishing, take a look at the link I posted...it has a link for COEs (Center of Excellence) in your state.
While we wait for others who may be able to answer your question about septal myectomy at Oregon Health Science, perhaps do some research and find out how many they do.
It's super important that the facility doing this surgery has a lot of experience doing them. A septal myectomy involves precision and finesse and needs to be in the hands of extremely skilled surgeons.
Your life depends on it!!
Too little...you may have to go back for another. Too much...you have life long debilitating heart failure.
A Septal myectomy really needs to be done by the top most qualified surgeons.
Do your research and do not be afraid to seek a referral outside your backyard.
I flew across the country from Northern California to Rochester Minnesota for my septal myectomy. I have never regretted my choice.
How was the fishing today? Catch any?
Debra, do you know how long the results of this procedure lasts? Does the thickening grow back over time?
The big question for many of us is: does the thickening grows back over time? There was a posting a while back where ONE person had that happen. Their medical contact told them it was unusual.
I see on that link suggested by Debra that OHSU (Oregon Health Science University) is listed as a COE, that is very good! In order to be designated as a COE, certain high standards must be met. Do as much research necessary to feel comfortable with whatever you decide, although none of us was ever truly comfortable with surgery on the horizon! As Debra @karukgirl noted, it is essential to have the very best handle your very precious heart! I was 75 when I had surgery and, like Debra, I traveled to Mayo from a considerable distance, it was one of 2 places suggested by my home cardiologist.
Hi there @nrshields, good question!
So I was told by the experts at the Mayo Clinic it would be extremely rare to grow back. In cases when the surgeon does not take enough hypertrophic tissue, it can happen. But if you are in a COE Center of Excellence for septal myectomy, that should not happen.
If you take away anything from this comment, let it be that the most important factor when considering open heart surgery for HOCM is being at a COE like the Mayo Clinic.
Do your research and learn as much as you can before making decisions and be sure your cardiologist is really educated in all things HCM/HOCM. Your life depends on it!
Thank you so much. I have every intention of going to Mayo Clinic. That is a very important part of this surgery especially if you have other health issues as well. Thank you for the good advice!
