Septal Ablation

Posted by hopenr @hopenr, 1 day ago

I have had HoCM for years and it has never been troublesome enough until about a year ago. My cardiologist then suggested a septal myectomy. I began making plans to go to The Mayo, even spoke with Dr Dearani's nurse when it came to my attention that Anschutz Hospital in Denver ( where I live) is actually a COE. So I went there and it was suggested (after testing) that I have a septal ablation. So I would like to ask anyone that has experienced this to share their experience. I would really appreciate it.

While those two procedures both aim to alleviate obstruction, they are very different. Did you ever get an answer as to why one cardiologist recommended myectomy (very invasive open heart surgery to cut out part of the heart) and other recommended ablation (minimally invasive catheter-based procedure)? I genuinely wish you well and are able to receive excellent care. I too live in Colorado (Windsor) and am using UCHealth for my care. Hoping this COE looks into expanding their surgical options in the future.

I had an alcohol septal ablation at Mayo in Rochester. No doubt I needed the surgery. My atrium, ventricle, and septum were extremely thick and the surgery was necessary. The procedure was uncomfortable, but manageable. My breathing certainly improved. I still have some chest pain and shortness of breath but I improved.
If your Cartiologist recommends an alcohol septal ablation then have it done!!
