Adults On The Autism Spectrum

Posted by Mamacita, Volunteer Mentor @mamacita, Apr 29, 2018

Maybe you were really shy as a child. Perhaps you took home a huge stack of books from the school library, read them, and returned them the next day. Or did your best friend find you crying in your closet, unable to answer the question “Why?” At any rate, your life could be traced to the Self-Help section of the local bookstore. Unfortunately, most of the books were not much help. ADHD seemed to fit, at times. Your shrink said you might be Bi-Polar, although she wasn’t really certain. All you knew was that you rarely fit in, anywhere. One day at work, it hit you square in the face: I don’t speak these people’s language! Really, it was like you were all playing this game, and everyone knew the rules but you. You couldn’t tell a joke, and you never “got” any joke your co-worker tried to tell you. People started getting annoyed with you, because you had a memory like a steel trap. They didn’t appreciate it when you called them on the carpet. Who knew? This was my life, and worse. I finally aced several tests that pointed me to the answer to my questions. The Autism Spectrum. Guess what? Little kids with Autism grow up to be Adults with Autism. Diagnosed late in life? This is the place for you!

@gingerw , and everyone, may I share an important new site for all of us?

My friend, Samantha Craft, recommended this site on Facebook today. I think we might check it out. Autism Net.

Let me know what you think.

I absolutely believe in that saying. “In a world where you can be anything, be kind” it is not always easy but it is necessary. I am sad to know this type of attitude persists. An educator convinced my parents that they needed to stop me from walking on my toes, through any means necessary. I found out just a few years ago that was why they did what they did. I still have lousy biomechanics, and I tend towards clumsiness but I do not …….always………walk on my toes.

REPLY

@auntieoakley , I am so sorry you had to to through that experience. We did not know anything about the Spectrum when I was a child. So my parents just did the best they could with me.

Now that I am aware of the consequences of not being my true self, warts and all, I see the need for transparency.

Everyone doesn't need to know every single little thing about me. My stims, my need for balance during the day, my need for community, or my need to be alone.

But I can be myself here. This is a judgement free zone.

God bless you and keep you.

Calling all moderators! @sirgalahad has contacted me regarding his lack of ability to get onto Mayo Clinic Connect. @john , Volunteer Mentor, @ginger, Volunteer Mentor, could you possibly check on that for me as I am pretty much tied up with babysitting my 6month old Grandaughter while we do what we can to help the family who's baby is trying to get here too soon.

Excuse me while I grab things off my table before she (Grandbaby)puts everything she can find in her mouth .

Thanking you in advance!

@Colleen Young, Connect Director, thank you for your kind assistance. We sure enjoy having this little Princess around. But we have learned it truly does take a village. She keeps us on our toes. Plus we just returned from spending the day with our little Mama who is valiantly trying to keep her baby boy developing and growing for as long as she can. She slept five hours last night, which is important. Means she probably did not have contractions duriing that time.

Everyone have a great day today. Oh. One last thing. Did you know that the man who started it all with Pokemon, is Autistic? Showed up on my newsfeed today.

Imagine.

Love and light.

@Gingergingerw, well, I finally got a shower about an hour ago. Little Princess went with her Mommy to eat Sushi with her other bestie. I lost my phone, (found it) loaded the dishwasher, made my bed,(finally) and thought I would post a quick note before she wakes up.

Got my game gear on. Not sure when the game is. Probably in another hour. Husband says he's getting chicken and all the fixings for us. My other daughter is here as well, so we should have a pretty full house. I know nothing about football. But my Dad loved it. So we watch it. RollTide!

I am as Aspie as it gets. I cannot comprehend all the social rules surrounding this national fascination with a leather ball being carried from one end of the field to the other. And bodies piled on top of one another,

No matter. We gather together and cheer them on. It's just good to be together.

Hope everyone has a good day today.
Love and light to you all.

@mamacita My dear, I used to tell people that if they really want the little white ball, why do they keep hitting it away from themselves and running after it? Glad you got your shower – didn't the warm water over your body feel good?

I didn't sleep too well last night, thinking about all that went on yesterday at the doctors, but did get up and go for a walk just after dawn. The thick fog seemed to muffle sounds, and for once I didn't turn around at the sight of the deer on the road, but forged ahead to get some steps in. The soft click of their feet on the fresh oiled pavement made for a break in the stillness, and their excited "huff" as I passed the stand of trees they were hiding in just added to the sense of no one else being up so early. Last night when I got home in the dark, there was a critter in the trees near our house. I know it was not a deer, and hope the cougar was not nearby. I turned the lights on and didn't see anything.

Today, a day of introspection, and wondering.
Love and light to you, also!

My dear @gingerw , I wish I could see those deer with you, and walk through those leaves, savoring the subtle fragrances of fall. I love the changes of the seasons.

Rest well, my friend. Enjoy all the good things. Hugs and good energy from Sweet Home, Alabama.

@mamacita, My 6th grade son is a big Pokemon fan. You should see his room right now … covered in stacks of Pokemon cards he's organizing, since someone just sold him a bunch of cards for very little money. Might be a good opportunity to tell him a bit about autism.
