Seeking Second Opinion for Aortic Dissection Surgery
Hello, my name is Kelvin.
My father underwent open-heart surgery (CABG) three years ago in Singapore. About a week ago, he was diagnosed with an aortic dissection and requires surgery very soon. We have consulted several doctors in Singapore, and they have all expressed that this is a very high-risk procedure, with an estimated 20–25% chance of mortality during surgery and about an 8% risk of stroke.
I have been researching and found that aortic dissection surgeries are performed more frequently in the US, and I am particularly interested in seeking a second opinion from specialists at Mayo Clinic or other top heart centers.
If anyone has experience with similar cases or knows how I can quickly connect with a specialist in the US, I would really appreciate your guidance. Any recommendations on the best hospitals or surgeons for aortic dissection surgery would also be extremely helpful.
Thank you in advance for your advice and support.
Kelvin

I’m sorry to hear about your father’s diagnosis. I survived an acute Type A aortic dissection in 2015, so I understand how overwhelming this situation can feel. You’re doing the right thing by seeking a second opinion. You're correct that aortic dissection surgeries are performed more frequently in the US, and centers like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Stanford Health Care, and Massachusetts General Hospital have some of the world’s leading specialists in this field. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) has an internationally recognized aortic surgery team with extensive experience in complex cases. Cleveland Clinic consistently ranks at the top for cardiac surgery and has a dedicated aortic center. Stanford has pioneered many advancements in aortic surgery, and Mass General has a strong program as well.
For a rapid consultation, I recommend reaching out directly to these centers through their international patient services departments. Mayo Clinic has a dedicated team for international cases that can coordinate medical record transfers and expedited evaluations. Cleveland Clinic also has an international department that can facilitate remote consultations. If travel to the US is a possibility, they may be able to arrange in-person evaluations quickly. Given the urgency of your father’s case, I suggest calling Mayo Clinic’s International Services directly at +1-507-284-8884 or visiting their website to submit an appointment request. Cleveland Clinic’s global patient services can be reached at +1-216-444-6400. Stanford and Mass General have similar international programs.
If you're looking for specific surgeons, Dr. Eric Roselli at Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Thoralf Sundt at Mass General are well-known for their expertise in aortic dissection surgery. Mayo Clinic and Stanford also have excellent teams with deep experience in complex aortic cases. Stay strong. You're advocating for your father in the best way possible. Peace.
As always, your help is invaluable.
Hi @kferbianto,
I wanted to check in to see how you were doing on your search for a second opinion regarding your Aortic dissection surgery for your father? Was he able to get the surgery and how is he currently doing? @moonboy offered some great input on some centers of excellence in the United States, were you able to see his suggestions?
