Reversal of a fundoplication

Posted by Pawsboy9 @pawsboy9, Aug 5, 2012

I had a hernia and the fundoplication done in February as post this my chest is on fire. Going back to see the surgeon who did it on Tuesday. Has anybody had the same experience? If this guy does not have a answer heading for Mayo.

Thanks
Dennis

I initially told my care team I thought my fundiplication may be too tight.

Since I had my fundiplication I have never been able to vomit. Although there are many occasions where it feels like I have to vomit. As far as burping goes it’s rare and I find it surprising when it happens. It does make me feel better when I burp.

One other thing. I do occasionally have what I call partial hick ups.

I had the procedure many years ago. I have not thrown up in all that time. Recently, I have had dry heaves. When your body tries to throw up but nothing but phlegm comes out. ???

You did not say why you had the procedure? Your esophagus is a fragile thing. You need the best surgeon for that. Not a general surgeon!

You could always ask the surgeon about loosening it up a bit. I expect that there's a reason that your stomach may want to expel its contents. If it doesn't bother you to not vomit then I'd let well enough alone. Watch what you eat so the food doesn't trigger a vomit signal. If you eat something contaminated it would be preferred to hurl it up.

The recovery was uncomfy until the tube was removed. The little bubble of gas that stayed up in the right shoulder was rather painful. It eventually went away.

FWIW it was the only time I ever had an anesthesiologist check on me the next day.

I recently had hiatal hernia repair and Nissen Fundoplication (07/28/23. I have lost 40 lbs, had to have a feeding tube placed and still cannot drink liquids other than milk. I cannot pass food at all. I have begged for a reversal and my doctor says she won't because of scar tissue. I have had hypersalivation since the surgery alongside severe foaming. I did not sign up for all of this! My life has been completely changed and I can no longer enjoy food or even going out in public because of the saliva 24/7. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
