Reversal of a fundoplication
I had a hernia and the fundoplication done in February as post this my chest is on fire. Going back to see the surgeon who did it on Tuesday. Has anybody had the same experience? If this guy does not have a answer heading for Mayo.
Thanks
Dennis

I never knew before I had my Nissen that there was a Toupet and I have no idea what TIF is. . My father-in-law had the Nissen a few months after me.. I could burp and vomit, but he could not. He said the not being able vomit was the worse.
I had the Nissen in 2001. It immediate started to fail, but I was better than before surgery. I had a repair in 2007 by a different surgeon. He placed mesh in a place he should not. We did not part on friendly terms. I kept telling him I was in a lot of pain and he ignored me.. he had the idea he never failed or did anything wrong in a surgery.
In 2013 my pain was very bad and a different surgeon referred me to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville FL. The surgeon undid the Nissen and did traditional repair. It started failing… he had ordered a swallow test in six months. I had results sent to him, but he was no longer at the Mayo Clinic.. so I was assigned a different surgeon.
He did a gastric bypass in 2014 and I had complications.. not his fault, just my body. Oh.. had a problem with Tricare getting approval for this surgery and previous one.. They farm out their peer to peer consults and it took a few months to get approval for both. I also had more out of pocket expense. Mayo Clinic accepted payments. No problems for approval on my last surgery at Mayo Clinic in 2015. .. which was for repair from the complication that I was too weak to go through immediately after the previous surgery.
I am okay now with that, but my esophagus is a mess from years of reflux. I am waiting to hear on an appointment now for an endoscopy.
I wish I could be more help to you.

I have one question is the redo did laparoscopically or the open method with 3, 4-month recovery
I was wondering if anyone has had the reverse Nissen Fundoplication surgery? My doctor is talking about possibly doing the reversal procedure on me. I've read several issues with it. I also was wondering about the statements I have read about not being able to burp or vomit after having the Nissen Fundoplication. Some are saying they are not able to do either. Is this true? The reason my doctor is talking about doing the reversal on me is because I can't stop vomiting. I am also able to burp. I had an upper GI done with the crystals and the barium. The nurses said they weren't worried about me burping because they knew I couldn't. They couldn't believe I did.
I can burp but can not vomit
I couldn’t burp or vomit after the Nissen Fundoplication. The Nissen is now coming apart and I can burp but still can’t vomit.
Hi @rowdy7 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. So glad you found us. I did move your post to a longstanding discussion about Nissen Fundoplication surgery reversal so that you can connect with others like @johnrobert999, @classic5657 and @classic5657
Does your doctor think it was done incorrectly because you are able to belch and vomit?
My Dr acts like he didn't do anything wrong. He just keeps saying he doesn't understand why I'm vomiting and no one ever does that. We can't get any answers out of him.
I was able to do both the same day I had the surgery. Even before my surgery my Dr never told me I wouldn't be able to do either. Now after my surgery he just keeps wondering why I am. That's all he says.
I had it done in 2003. Just started to act up again six months ago. My doctor retired so going to see a new doctor in July. I guess I will find out what's going on.
I had a Nissan flondiplicaion done a year ago this past june. I have had swallowing problems, thrush, heartburn, diarrhea, bloating, chronic cough, and my stomach still hurts. I cannot burp either. The swallowing is better. I got down to 85 pounds and have only gained 10 pounds in a year. The surgeon that did my surgery was fired so now I am seeing a gastronologist. He keeps putting me off on scoping me. He put me on anxiety meds which he says he is not using them for that purpose, I guess to try to relax my stomach. I never have the feeling of being hungry, and everything I eat goes right through me. I asked him about having this reversed and he said I wouldn't want to go through that. I wish I would never have had it done, the diarrhea and bloating is the worst. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
