Retinal tear and sports

Posted by cemsid @cemsid, Mar 13, 2022

Hello. I went to the eye doctor 5 years ago and I was told that I have a problem with the retina of my eye. It was said that there are holes in the retina and these holes need to be glued in place with a laser. I can't do sports because of retina problem. If I have surgery with laser, will I have any problems with weight lifting? By the way, when I close and open my eyes when I'm tired, lightning strikes happen for a moment. Is this normal?

I had a retinal tear in the 80s and was not allowed to even drive for a few weeks after surgery. I did too much exercise type activity one day and developed small holes which were lasered because the fluid behind the retina was leaking.

I am surprised you waited this long. You need to get that fixed ASAP or you risk losing your sight totally.
You didn’t say what sports you were concerned about but I suspect contact sports would be out of the question. Maybe some other sports as long as eye protection is worn. The lightening effects you are seeing is a clear indicator of a big problem looming down the road.

Retinal tears are very common in football, basketball and baseball. Don’t delay any longer …..you are risking your vision. You are lucky so far. I know someone who waited until the retinal fluid was leaking out of his eye….lost the vision completely.

Laser surgery is done in the office and the eye needs time to heal. Go….please.

Today I am being treated for macular edema in the eye that had the tear…related?…maybe. But the vision after the surgery was worse and still is today.

@cemsid, those are great questions to ask your eye doctor. When will you be having surgery?

Hello. I have to postpone it all the time due to financial problems. Recently, black spots started to increase in my eyes. I had to quit sports because of this disease.

I had retinal detachment surgery one year ago at the University of Iowa. The surgeons did a beautiful job and I had an uneventful recovery. I still have 20/20 vision in that eye. They are ranked 5th in the U.S. for clinical eye care. If you live within driving distance, I recommend that you go there immediately today for emergency evaluation. If not, go to the nearest major eye center. Both the floaters and the light flashes are warnings of possible impending retinal tear or detachment. The flashes indicate traction on the retina. Have you checked whether you also see them in a darkened room? They're hard to see with your eyes open and the lights on. Regardless of your financial situation, I would not wait. I'm sure you will later regret not going, if you lose sight in that eye. I believe the cost of my surgery was $12,000. It's worth $12,000 to save your sight. You could work out an installment plan for payment. Please call today before the weekend to see the best retinal specialist you can.
