Remote donation

Posted by adriisanchez @adriisanchez, 6 days ago

So I stay in Olympia Washington and my mom lives in surprise Az. She is going through dialysis and I just found out we have the same blood type. I was trying to do a remote transplant but I'm not sure she has been to the Mayo clinic because it's the only one coming out for the UW medical center here in wa and I wanted to know if I can have her transfered to that clinic . She usually goes to banner hospital and also did some tests at st. Joseph in phoenix . Can she switch?

What is a remote donation? You are here, she is there.....?

Remote donation would be me doing the labs and the surgery here in wa state and get the kidney transported to my mom in arizona.

@adriisanchez Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! This is an awesome gift to your mom!

That is a question for the transplant centers. Typically, each one has their own criteria regarding details of transplant. The only blood type I know that must receive the same type is O+ where a solid organ is involved.

Are there limitations that would preclude you from traveling to her location in Arizona?

No . Not really. Though , I actually want to be close to my mom for all this . That's If I do qualify to donate her a kidney. And Because I will receive the same care from my older sister.. (well she mentioned it to me just recently) 🙂and I will have my 3 kids by my side as well. So we will be traveling..

Could I just say, that, if you find you are not a good match for your mother...you can still help her. My son was not a match for me but through the National Kidney Registry, he donated to and saved the life of a young father in California and that put me in the pool for a living kidney that matched me. It took 5 months for a match instead of 5-7 years. My son donated in Seattle and it was flown to San Francisco. Good luck to you!

Oftentimes, if you’re approved for the waitlist at one transplant center, they will be able to transfer test results to another center, as long as they’ve been performed within 1 year. However, all transplant centers will require you to meet with their transplant team before being approved at their center. Comparing transplant centers can be helpful when you’re thinking about multi-listing.
