Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time
I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

@ginger1957 I had my first reclast infusion on 5/12/26 and read a lot on it before I always drink about 85+ ounces of water per day so I won't get kidney stones and I work with a nutritionist and I've been very aware that I need to take more calcium citrate powder so before and after I'm making sure I get 1500 mg of calcium from both from the powder and my food. I got an infusion over a one hour period instead of 15 minutes which is recommended and I started taking Tylenol at 9:15 in the morning got the infusion at 11:30 and took another two Tylenol at 315 and did this that day and for two days after- today is only may 16 and so far I seem to be fine of course I'm very worried but I lost 8 1/2% of my bone in 2 1/2 years because I must be on omeprazole twice a day 40 mg and Pepcid because I had an esophagectomy for a squamous cell on my esophagus in June 2019 and I have severe reflux because I have no valves to keep the food down and the omeprazole must be leechng bone from my body. I'm hoping that this reclast will help in addition I always do 40 minutes of exercise in the morning standing sitting and lying with bands and I walk two or three hours a day, but this is not helping my osteoporosis so I plan to start PT and try to lift weights with supervision so I don't break anything. I have severe osteoporosis and I'm quite worried about breaking bones just by bending I weigh and measure my food by ounces and grams and never cheat and eat only organic, and I'm 99% vegan having added only 1 ounce of sardines a day to increase my calcium which I will alternate with chicken because I don't want to get mercury or cadmium poisoning. Everything is very hard for me because I have pre-diabetes hypoglycemia IBS I make stones so I have to be on a low oxalate diet and I have two fractures in my back from lifting things that were too heavy for me on my volunteer job I'm 81 years old and I always wanted to live a long life but now I'm just not sure. Luckily I have a very loving partner and loving siblings and family and connections to the community with loving friends too, and still teach cello online and have my former students in my life as well- I'm doing as much as I can to live as long as I can and hope I get better bones with the reclast infusion with no bad side effects. Naomi.

Well It sounds like you are doing everything you can. Good for you. When I had my 2 compression fractures last November I got into a program for osteoporosis and exercise and balance. I also started taken a product called algaecal plus. I do not know if any of it is doing any good. They say don't bother even taken a dexa scan for a year but I am anxious to see if it at least stabilized my bone density. So I am having another bone density on June 2. I also have a litany of "issues" going for a biopsy for my breast on May 29th, I get kidney stones, neuropathy in my feet and so on. But we need to take them one day at a time and just breathe. We are her TODAY so do everything you can do to enjoy your life and let tomorrow take care of itself. A few weeks before my mother died at age 90 she said "i spent so much of my life worrying about things that never happened". Easier said than done. Good luck. Also the next time you get a Dexa scan get one with TBS (so few doctors even know what that is).....It is a fragility score and some believe it is even more important than the bone density number. the only placte in boston that offers it is Brigham and Womens on longwood ave.
I did get my tribecular bone score and color picures of my spine and they were very very bad a lot of red and yellow and hardly any green, very bad, ------good luck!~ I have to see if they will pay for an earlier bone scan as insurance only pays what are you writing somebody wrote me from Mail Mayo clinic every two years and I want to know at least in a year how I am doing.

1 Reaction@naoshapiro1 Did you get a Marodyne LIV and use it?
I used one at PT for about three months and I don't think it did a thing for me because I still showed an 8% loss of bone in 2 1/2 years -when you have very severe osteoporosis you can actually injure yourself on it. I'm going back to PT and I may go back on the machine-they have one- but as far as I can tell it didn't do a thing for me and I'm not gonna spend thousands of dollars to buy one. Do you have any experience with It?
@naoshapiro1 The office of a doctor of chiropractic doctor recommended the below WBV machine to me. It does both LIV and a higher intensity level. It also lets you choose your frequency from about 15 Hz up.
I did extensive research and decided that for $600 it was worth a try to use on my non-gym days.
Do lots of research before deciding to invest in any WBV, and then about which amplitudes are best.

@kfhoz it's very kind of you to have done the research and to give me this information which I'll write down later, but I'm not going to get a machine because I'm told that people was really really really bad osteoporosis could actually break when they use these machines and I'm not one to try something where I've been warned not to. thank you for taking the time to let me know. I'm just too scared to use anything that could break me. My bones are very, very bad.

1 Reaction@pacred I also had my Reclast infusion on December 4, 2025, my next infusion will be in December. Prior to the infusion I took Benedryil & drank water, had no side effects. I'm wondering if one side effect could be Chronic Kidney Disease. I had blood & urine test last week & this was the result. Curious to any knowledge if this could be a side effect? My best to you.
@askjewels Just FYI, There are ongoing studies linking Reclast with Giant Cell Arteritis.
The studies that are being conducted are small at this time. Research this online.
Oh great thanks for letting me and others know.
