Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

Jb123, I asked the questions to understand how your doctor determined when to start Reclast. Did your doctor follow Keith McCormick's method (see Windyshores comment re timing) or another method?

All I know is my doctor follows the latest research and so I followed what he recommended.

I had a reclast infusion done 2 years ago and ended up in the ER with severe back and stomach pain. It was horrible pain that lasted for days. They ran all sorts of test and found Tarlov Cyst through every level of my spine. Sent me home and the diagnosis was reaction to the infusion. Any else have this kind of reaction?

After one year of monthly Evenity, I had good results for bone growth. Evenity isn’t recommended beyond that (for at least 3 years, if I remember correctly), because it doesn’t produce comparable results to the first year, so last month, she started me on once yearly Reclast.
Have not experience Side effects. I’m so sorry to hear this has happened to you! I hope it ends SOON. This comes from someone who has surgery 15 years ago that left me with chronic nerve pain from waist down for which there is only minor help for, so I understand all the facets of what pain does to one’s life.
Good luck. If you need to talk more about how this has affected your life, I am here.

Has anyone done Reclast with stage 3b kidney disease? My eGFR is now 36 or 41 (if I drink a lot of water). My doc wants to do 20% of the usual dose as a test. I need to preserve gains from Tymlos and am exploring various options.

I have a friend who was given this infusion and had projectile vomiting that night and debilitating body and joint pain, and ongoing nausea for days and days. She was taking a cancer medication that is contraindicated for Reclast infusion but her doctor ignored that. She has since reported him for malpractice.

From what she said the only thing that helped was drinking gallons of water.

Does anyone have a remedy for the nausea, body aches and flu-like symptoms brought on by Forteo? I am trying to stick with it but have to keep stopping the daily injections because of the debilitating side effects. The only thing that helps is bed rest and pep bismol but it takes days of rest and a bottle of pepto a week to keep things under control.

I could not tolerate Forteo, so I did Tymlos which has an adjustable dose on the pen. I started low, let my body adjust and ramped up over time. I still take 6-7 out of 8 "clicks" even as I am finishing and have great gains.

THANK YOU SO MUCH,
I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR REPLY!! My doctor told me yesterday that you could not adjust the dose for Tymlos. Obviously he is wrong. I will be checking out this alternative asap. Thank you again so much. You give me hope. Pat J in San Jose

I am very sensitive to meds and STILL cannot tolerate the full 8 clicks! But as I said, Tymlos has really helped my bones and I could handle 6-7 clicks. My doc was happy with 6, which is a 3/4 dose.

Keith McCormick's new book "Great Bones" has info on how to transition from Prolia to Reclast. He says that if the Prolia is still active 6 months after your last injection, the Reclast won't work. That means there is potentially a period after that Reclast when you are losing bone via rebound.

But then again, if you wait 9 months after the last Prolia, there could have been a rebound bone loss starting 5 months after that last injection.

People really vary in their response and the length of their response to Prolia, he writes. The drug company (Amgen) suggested Reclast after 6 months from studies but there is variability and timing is important.

He writes that delaying Reclast for even 4-16 weeks after Prolia wears off can increase fracture risk.

DEXA's measure bone density but quality is important too. For that reason he says that repeat CTX tests (every 4-6 weeks) during this period after stopping Prolia are essential to determine when Prolia has worn off, which is when Reclast is then effective and should be started immediately.

Another CTX should be done one month after Reclast, and again 3-6 months after and a repeat infusion should be done if CTX continues to rise meaning continued bone loss.

My doc doesn't do CTX at all. I did have a baseline done, suggested by Dr. McCormick. I imagine this info is right on target but we need docs who will do this!

I’m totally confused . I am on Evenity for 1 yr . Only been on for 4 months now . My endocrinologist told me after 1 yr of this . I have to take Prolia . No exceptions .
