Reading about dissection

People on here have shared about having aortic dissection while on an airplane or on vacation. I’m confused because I thought that would be instantaneous death. If that happens would I have time to go to the hospital ? What does it feel like ? What are the symptoms ? I’m newly diagnosed with a 4.5 and my anxiety is high and despondent over this. I hate feeling like a walking time bomb.

At 4.5 you are still at a very low risk, but do a search for messages posted by @moonboy he has talked extensively about his own experience with a dissection. It is a very short time you need to be within minutes of an experienced heart surgeon and medical center.

Thanks for posting. You’re gonna be fine. You’re in the right place and you should listen to your medical team. I don’t want you to worry constantly because it’s not gonna help. What’s gonna help is if you find a really good thoracic surgeon and consult with him and get regular scans when they tell you to. This is not the kind of thing you can go see your cardiologist for or a general practitioner. This is serious stuff. You’ll know you’re having a dissection because even though it’s not instantaneous staff it most surely was extraordinarily painful. It felt like someone was tearing the skin off my back. So I don’t wanna scare you, but I do want you to know that it’s important that you care for yourself. Keep your blood pressure down and listen to a medical team. You should be looking at places like Mayo, Cleveland clinic, UCSD in California, University of Minnesota, UT, Houston, etc. There are lots of great healthcare facilities that do tremendous aortic work. It is possible to survive this and have a good life. I am a walking talking testament to that. I fully dissected in 2015 and here I am in 2025 talking to you. I wish that I would’ve known that I had this problem because I would’ve done something about it before I suddenly dissected. When you can get preplanned and scheduled surgery, it’s a much more survival condition and one where you can make a healthy plan for yourself about how you’re going to deal with work, Home, kids, wills, trust and things like that. You aren’t like other people and that’s OK Because you’re going to be OK. If you wanna talk to me privately, you can always send me an email at PBarry@Lawpoint.com. I know that it’s scary because I’ve been through it, but it is completely survivable and with a good surgical team you’re going to be fine. Listen to your doctors and find a great thoracic surgeon that you can have review your scans and make a plan for surgery. Peace.
