R-ALA, Why do neurologists not prescribe this medication/supplement?
I have been reading about how R-ALA and its benefits works for peripheral neuropathy.It seems that every article recommends its use.
Why then do practically every neurologist/doctor advise against its use. Am I missing something obvious. I am told it is often prescribed elsewhere e.g. Germany.

2 Reactions@SusanEllen66 . Thank you so much for the suggestion . Do you mean immediately after food?
This is interesting for sure! I have numbness on the entire left side of my body and it is migrating to my right side. Been coming on for about 6 years and moving faster and my physical limitations are increasing. I do not have any pain - just numbness.
I am curious then, did it help with the numbness or just pain/pins and needles that many experience?
I too, am in Albuquerque, NM.
Thank you for any info!

1 ReactionJust FYI, Alpha Lipoic Acid was first described for neuropathy in a German paper so that is probably why it is more common in Europe. I tried it for a year but it made no difference in my tingling and numbness in my feet. But my condition was caused by a crushed L3 disc in an accident years ago. People with idiopathic (unknown cause) neuropathy may respond differently.
@amota Can you share what brand you ordered from Amazon?
Totaria
R-Alpha Lipolic Acid, 600MG

@sbelur sure that should help.
Keep working with it. Sometimes just before eating works too. Just have something in your stomach.

What brand do you find helpful? I’m new to the group. I have Axonal sensory motor polyneuropathy I was taking Nervive with ALA I was just diagnosed officially after seeing my Neurologist for 2 years ONKY suggested Gabapentin. Anyway I think ALA helped but I’ve gotten worse. Got a B12 shot it didn’t work either. Maybe a flare?
