Psychiatrist has recommended Cymbalta for depression

Posted by clemsonbabe @clemsonbabe, Oct 24, 2023

My psychiatrist has recommended Cymbalta for depression. I already take Mirtazipine and Xanax for depression and anxiety. I am taking Gabapentin and Hydrocodone and a muscle relaxer for back pain after serious surgery. I am worried about adding one more drug to this mix. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

This was my experience with duloxetine. I was prescribed it for depression and pain. I have ptsd. I became dizzy. A huge fall risk for me. I was tapered off it about 2 months ago. The dizziness decreased but I was taking lorsartan too for hypertension. I stopped it too. My dizziness is completely gone. My BP is normal. Be careful with prescription meds especially as we age. I am 63. The less rxs I take the better. Check out Beers Criteria if you are interested. It is a list of medications with severe adverse effects in the older population

Hi, I'm also a Clemson fan.... Grew up there; went to Clemson University. Anyway, I was wondering if you ever took the cymbalta and if it helped? Did you experience any side effects? Hoping the best for you!

I took Cymbalta for about a week. I had higher anxiety, nausea, and tingling in my legs. I could not take it. I continue to take a low dose of Mirtazapine, along with a low dose of Xanax. I also take Hydrocodone and Gabapentin for pain. I feel like a walking drug store, but at least I am able to manage the anxiety and pain levels most days. Go Tigers!

I am on 60mg and it helped me a lot with depression, energy and neuropathy pain. At first I had some stomach pain as I took it at breakfast. When I waited to take it half an hour after breakfast I did just fine.

Sounds like a lot of drugs at once. I'd research this.

You really should get a second opinion about all the medication you’re taking. You really are on a lot and may feel better if you can get off some of them. I wouldn’t start the Cymbalta until I spoke with another doctor. Preferably a psychiatrist.

@clemsonbabe, hi. i take 120 mg of Cymbalta a day for depression and pain. for me, it helps with depression more. i don't feel so depressed. but remember. it all depends on how depressed you are. and what the dosage will be. ok? good luck danny. edit; please remember THAT ANY MEDICATION "YOU" TAKE will affect you differently than the rest of us here. somebody said research the meds you're on. and get a second opinion. i believe in them. even 3rds, 4ths. you know. especially after you research them. find what works best for you only. again, good luck.

Are you having any significant or noticeable side effects from the Cymbalta?

Hi! I was on Paxil for 15 years, new primary care suggested I go off, big mistake. Since then I tried to get back on Paxil, severe nausea, tried Effexor, Zoloft, Lexapro, celexa, Remeron Elavil and now I’m on day 10 of Cymbalta. All have caused severe nausea even with Zofran. Feeling hopeless. How long should I give the Cymbalta?

Cymbalta is usually prescribed for patients with chronic pain like arthritis, fibromyalgia and nerve pain. It is also prescribed for anxiety/depression but don’t think it is a first go to for depression. I was on Cymbalta for a couple years due to chronic pain.

If Cymbalta is causing significant symptoms and it has been a couple weeks, it may not be a good medication for you. My thinking is that bad symptoms in the first few weeks at low doses is not a good sign and may indicate a different medication should be tried.

Have you tried Wellbutrin/bupropion and/or Zoloft/sertraline? I am on both now for major depression. Zoloft was also prescribed for me when I had panic attacks during pregnancy hormonal changes. I have not had any issues with major side effects when starting at low doses and gradually increased.
