Promises of improved kidney function?

Posted by zeppo @zeppo, Jul 13, 2021

Is anyone aware of the naturopath with Kidney Disease Solutions at Kidney solution.net. ? He is promoting a book and diet that participants say are successful in increasing GFR.

@susanna82 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You have landed among people who share your similar health journey, and offer their experiences to show what has worked for them!

As you have found out, changing your diet to one that is lower in potassium, calcium, and phosphorous can certainly help the health of your kidneys. Also, exercising and keeping a healthy blood pressure will go a long ways towards feeling better. The medical community will usually look at the trend of a patient's eGFR [estimated glomular filtration rate = kidney function], not necessarily a one-time value. There are many factors for differing values, including hydration level, and even different labs or machines. And, as you know, everyone is different, which is why we get so much out of what everyone share here.

Have a medical team who you feel comfortable with is crucial. Like you, I just changed to a new nephrologist, and have an appointment with her next week. Has your doctor given you the reason for your kidney disease [hereditary factors, blood pressure, diabetes, etc]?

Hi Ginger,

Thanks for your response. My kidney disease is because I took Bactrim for six years to finally end my constant UTS, over time. The only comment my first kidney doctor made about anything, was that it had kept me alive.
I have no other health issues.

I am witching doctors since he made a follow-up appointment for Feb. 23, 2022, and gave me no advice at all. Working toward finding a nutritionist.

Thanks for your response, I have been terrified. My goal is to raise my GFR. Pretty much all I know at this point is self-discovered and self-taught. I am appreciative of help from others such as yourself.

That would be switching, not witching...doctors.

Susanna,
Although some on this site may have difficulty with progress that is not scientifically proven by Western standards, I believe one can incorporate both modalities. I would recommend following a kidney friendly diet, one with low Potassium (if your Potassium is high). And if you have a nephrologist who is not partnering with you, I would get another doctor. Depending on where you live and what practitioners are available, you might look into an acupuncturist who has treated kidney disease. That’s what I did and changed my numbers after 3 years of declining a GFR. So I encourage you to be proactive.

@alpha642 I will be interested to hear how this new-to-you approach to your health works out for you. Will you do me a favor and come back to report to us, how you feel and any changes you see? Do you know exactly what you will be doing/taking?

Hard to handle kidney disease. Stage 3A-3B. High blood pressure. Doctor just gave me Altace. Took one pill this morning. Havn't urinated
all day. Concerned about this. Blood pressure is at good level. Wonder if anyone else has had this experience. This is a side effect which
doctor didn't mention but is mentioned when you check out drug. Would appreciate input from anyone with similiar experience.

As a Stage 4 am VERY concerned about halting the GFR decline, etc. Researched Chinese medicine practitioners and located one here near my home with outstanding credentials, Began treatment with acupuncture needling as well as patches that are applied to both hands - but mostly on the left -- as well as 'warming' -- application of a heat lamp to my belly/kidney area, His reviews are really good and he said he hopes to HALT the GFR decline and increase my kidney function -- from his lips,... let's see if it works. Check back in 4-5 weeks. I will see him 3 x week at first and then to taper off. Anybody else have positive results from alternative medicine??

@petuniamom567 Here is the drug information from WebMD, on altace"
https://www.drugs.com/altace.html

As you can see from the side effects, it mentions to call your doctor at once if you have little or no urination. You don't mention if the script you had filled was done at a pharmacy near you? If so, and they are open tomorrow, I might check with that pharmacist to get their thoughts on this situation. You may also want to call your doctor's practice and get a message to him.

I will be interested to hear what happens in the next few days!

I want to comment that I was able to improve my GFR and Creatinine after just 3 months with an accomplished Acupuncurist and Chinese herbs. My creatinine was 1.14 and my GFR 45. I improved these numbers to 1.0 and 55 respectively. I have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in the last 2 years. Using acupuncture and long term Chinese therapy has been known to improve kidney function. I can only comment on my progress ( which I’m really pleased about) after only 3 months. That was the only thing I changed (I also improved my Potassium by following a low K diet. This approach is long term. I plan to continue with this into the future.

What is the Chinese therapy that improved your creatinine and GFR?

Acupuncture weekly and specially formulated Chinese herbs that improve kidney function. These herbs are boiled, strained and the “tea” is drunk daily. It has to be put together by a licensed, experienced herbalist.
