PROMISE Study: Registry of PCa Genetics and Outcomes

Posted by dailyeffort @dailyeffort, Mar 12 9:17pm

Many of us on MCC have joined this important study (not the same as Decipher testing), and hope you will consider doing so.
PROMISE is a registry of prostate cancer patients participating in a research study to learn how genetic differences can affect patient outcomes. In the fight against prostate cancer, your DNA may be the most powerful tool. Participation is free, registration is done online and a saliva collection kit is sent to you. You enclose a sample, return it by mail. You’ll get information, tailored to your DNA, to better understand potential treatment options and genetic risk.
Here is a link to learn more about the study and why hereditary cancer gene testing is important to you individually, and to the future treatment of Prostate Cancer. https://www.prostatecancerpromise.org/

First, thank you all for your experiences on the journey no one wants to be on!
I was also curious as well when I found the PROMISE Study in the forum and signed up.

Hereby my experience with the Color genetic kit, all within a month.
Check the Discovery section in your Color account if you have not received an email notification for the complimentary genetic insights. Probably good to have your Health history added in your Color account and maybe future insights will be shared when available. My Western European descent confirmed 🙂

Did you get a document, multiple pages, from them? That’s what I got not what you’ve got here which is pretty much nothing.

Can you click on “Genetic ancestry” and get anything, Not sure if it’s a hot Link.

Hmmm, I do not think we got anything else, just the info that my husband did not carry any genes related to PC. Well, we know our ancestry in detail since we are coming form Europe and know linage many generations back. Regarding other traits mentioned in above post - it would be cute to know but nothing very important. I mean, one knows if one is lactose intolerant or if he/she is flushing after glass of wine (I definitely do XP) .

Hi @jeffmarc It is not a document, the information is behind those buttons.
Will attach my Genetic ancestry so you have an idea what is looks like.
The trait buttons have some information as well where you can agree with the accuracy of those biomarkers.

For example: I was born and raised in the Netherlands, my mom is Dutch and my dad was from Indonesia. As for the traits, I am likely to taste certain bitter compounds - The science of bitter taste. This is pretty accurate there I like my occasional Heineken 🙂

Same here, they did not find an increased risk for hereditary cancer in the genes they looked at. The other information might not always be accurate: "You have a slightly higher chance of disliking cilantro" .... I love cilantro! 🙂

So far I got the same type of report from 23 and me. Don't they do a specific genomic test?

REPLY

Yeah. Neat. Did that early on, NOT genetic, treatment followed.
Last year did another test, sent the sample off to a lab in Chicago.
Ooops.
Now they say ATM variant and genetic/inherited. Would have been nice if Promise has said that two years prior.
It's okay. I read the back of the book.....none of us gets out of life alive!
