Prednisolone (Corticosteroid): Long term side effects
I have been on prednisolone >= 10 mg for years now. I now have steroid induced diabetes and possibly weak bones. I do not want it to get worse. How do you cope with these?

I have been on prednisone for the past 6 years (low dose between 5 and 10mg) to subdue the full body hives and itching caused by a medication that I must take. There are no other medication options unless I choose to be committed to an infusion clinic the rest of my life. Prednisone has been a life saver for me. Since medication allergies are most time histamine reactions, I also take high doses of fexofenadine when I have a particularly strong attack.
Taper off of Prednisone! It is a great drug for very short term use, but long term it will attack your bones and muscles, give you diabetes and 150 other side effects. A few months of Prednisone crippled my legs!!! Doctors are not taught about this or tapering necessity in Medical School! Find a doc that is informed. Good wishes to you
@mnblue50 I wish it was that simple. The problem is that for some diseases and conditions, there is no available alternative to prednisone or prednisolone. The risks must be balanced against the need to use it long term. This mother's post is just one example:

Most of the physicians I have seen are keenly aware of the risks, and minimize the dosage and/or length of time on the medication wherever possible.
So we need to be careful about advising people here to "taper off" - that is medical advice best provided by their doctors.
