Prednisolone and Scabs in Nose

Posted by macferse @macferse, Nov 6, 2023

I have tapered down to 2mg for PMR and many of my side effects have eased. However, like the last bout of PMR 12 years ago, I am now experiencing scabs inside my nostrils that never heal. I have been applying vaseline but recently read it could be dangerous in allowing some ingredients to be breathed in. I'll be grateful if anyone has any recommendations ?

Hi @macferse, I too have used vaseline in my nostrils but was unaware of the warnings. Mayo Clinic has some information here on the question - Petroleum jelly: Safe for a dry nose?: https://www.mayoclinic.org/petroleum-jelly/expert-answers/faq-20057784. Since I also use a CPAP at night a sleep medicine therapist recommended I not use any petroleum based gel in my nose. There are a lot of different nasal gels you can use. I have used Ayr Saline Nasal Gel and it works pretty good - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0010NSC1U.

Have you discussed your question with your doctor or an ENT?

Enormous thanks, John. That's really helpful and an impressively prompt reply. I haven't discussed with my GP or an ENT. My GP is usually quite vague about answering PMR related questions. However, the link you have included supports exactly what I have read.

Thanks also for the link for Ayr saline Nasal Gel.

I have used the saline Nasal Gel too and it works quite well. I had a bout of the nose scabs several years ago during the winter months. I didn't realize that was a symptom of PMR. I've had a very difficult time find a good neurologist in my area. I live in Lexington, KY area if anyone knows of one.
