Post septum myectomy: How did you feel 9 weeks after surgery?

Posted by angiev18 @angiev18, Sep 24, 2020

Hi. Just wondering how those who have had septum myectomy feel 9 weeks post op? Still have any symptoms like before surgery gor HOCM? Had surgery in July at Rochester, MN. Just curious to how others felt 9 weeks out and beyond. Thanks in advance.

I am 69 and had HCM surgery on March 7th. Before surgery I couldn't walk for more than 10 minutes without being short of breath and needing to sit down. Stairs were especially difficult. Now, coming up to 6 months post-op I have very gradually worked up to walking 30 to 45 minutes with no symptoms. The only thing that still bothers me is some sensitivity and discomfort in my incision. At my follow with the surgeon in June he said that was normal. Hopefully it will clear up eventually. Due to my local hospital having a backlog I'm not starting cardiac rehab until Sept. 18th.

I am glad to hear how you are doing @jootzy! It sounds like you are doing really well, especially walking. I found that the more I walked, the better I felt. I feel like I am unrestricted now with walking. I too had the super sensitive scar. It was so sensitive even the softest tee shirts were irritating. I wore V-neck shirts for several months before it calmed down. I hope that happens for you soon too. I am also happy to hear you will be going to rehab. Too bad you have to wait so long though... that's a bummer. It sounds like you will breeze through it. The arm machines were what helped me the most, but all the equipment was helpful...and I met some really nice people there too. Having a sensitive or irritable scar is probably normal, and part of the program in open heart surgery. It just takes time, and we all heal differently. What surprised you the most about going through this surgery?

My 33 year old daughter was on camzyos for 6 months. She sometimes had a low gradient but the gradient would also go back up. She is exhausted and can’t do anything. She is being scheduled for a septal myectomy. Will she ever feel better than she did when hcm went to obstructive? We were hoping she would feel like a new person.

Hi @dbrima, I was wondering how things are going for your daughter and you and grandson? I sent a note to you a couple of weeks ago, but did not see a response and figured you had your hands full. Has your daughter's surgery been scheduled? Has she had it already? Hoping for the best news possible for you all...

I hope so too.
If I may ask, who is your Dr., mine was Dr. Dearani and I can't express how pleased I was with him & his staff.

Dr Geske is my heart doctor. I can’t remember the name of the surgeon right and I haven’t met him yet, but surgery is planned for June 23rd and I will meet him on the 22nd.

Hi everyone! I live with HCM and I’m going to be having septal myectomy sometime in June. I try not to think about the surgery but the outcome and how much better I will feel. Has anyone had the surgery and how do you feel now?

Hi Stall, I had the cardio myopathy 4 weeks ago yesterday.
• I'm a 55 YO, male, in pretty good shape (180 lbs)
• I had a great experience at Mayo.
• I had 0 pain from the surgery
• My chest felt like I was in a car accident, bruised and some muscle soreness, but no pain.
• I feared post surgery pain would be the worst - it wasn't
• I urinated a lot for the first few day - a lot
• Surgery was about 6 hours
• Dearani was my surgeon - the BEST!
• Everyone was very, very nice.
• It took a couple of days to have a bowel movement, having one is a big deal, they'll make that clear
• At home now, I do feel some pain in my chest, will see my cardiologist in 2 weeks to get more info. on that
• I do take care to obey the "no lifting over 5lb, etc. stuff but I feel like I could do far more than I do.
• Have a super-positive attitude - it WILL make all the difference.
• As a Christian I didn't / don't fear dying which made the experience all the better.

@thomasandmichelle so glad you had a good experience in the end and are healed now.
@servant1966, WOW zero pain is awesome! Is it normal to urinate a lot the first few days after surgery?

Well, I understand that a.) I am young (55); and b.) I am in good shape (I think of people in good shape as having at least a 2-pack not a keg 🙂 ) but thats what they say so I think that really helped.
Not sure on the urinating its just that for the 1st 3-4 days each time there was a shift change they would point out how much I was urinating. I started asking and they said that nothing was wrong, in fact it proved my kidneys were in good shape, but that it WAS a lot. I ensured I drank a lot - which I always drink a lot of water - so that may have been part of it. After 4 days though I became more "normal."

I’m 6 months out of surgery and wow what a difference, there was good days and some days I didn’t think I was gonna heal. I work construction and I went back to work a month to early though, went back right at 8 weeks, if I knew I would wait 12
