Reaction to Medication after liver transplant: What could it be?
My mom had a liver transplant just a little over 3 months ago. She came home a month ago. After her transplant and once she was off all her pain meds she would complain that the sides of her legs hurt, but we didn’t think much of it because obviously she just went through a whole lot and we thought pain and soreness would be part of the process. It has gotten worse and she’s developed what she says feels like “little balls of nerves” they hurt to the touch and some days she really doesn’t want to do anything due to the pain. One of her doctors here in our town(not mayo clinic) said it could be a reaction to her anti-rejection meds. Has anyone ever dealt with or heard of this? Any information you might have would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Your mom is not alone. This post transplant time is challenging with all of the changes and transitioning. I am leaving the medication decisions up to Mayo team. We need to provide the team with good information of when, where, and what level of the various side effects of meds. With their experience and expertise, our team can decide to change or lower meds- or add meds such as Gabapentin for nerve issues. I am currently taking Gabapentin for crazy “tingling” feeling in hands and feet. Next issue for me is leg muscle cramping…
@syntheacarrillo, I can imagine you and your mom are worried. I encourage you to contact her transplant team directly. They will want to know about anything that concerns you and her recovery.
Did your mom have her transplant at Mayo Clinic?
