Post Hip Replacement Surgery complications

Posted by Ann Dunn @anndunn, Nov 14, 2011

I am in search of a solution to chronic pain after surgery that has lasted a
year and half. The pain comes while I'm standing or walking. Gone when I sit or lie down, or if I'm swimming in a warm pool.
Can anyone shed any light on what I can do or what this condition is that I am experiencing.
Thanks.

I have total hip replacement surgery March 1, 2023. I did ok at first, did 13 sessions of pt, then things got worse. I still walk with a cane and my hip hurts so bad. I also have unexplained pain in my right leg? Seeing my 2d doctor next week. What exactly is involved in a revision replacement? I'm so frustrated and depressed. It hurts so bad to lean over or twist around. I still can't sleep on the surgical side. I want to be able to do things again. I just sit and lay around most of the time. The pain management doctors are so hard to deal with. I left my dr. a message I needed a refill. She did not fill it, no message, nothing. I have to go through the weekend without pain meds. Life is just impossible to get through right now. The pain management centers in my area are pitiful. Anyway, sorry to go on and on. Just wondering if a revision is discussed with my second hip dr., what does it involve? Thanks so much.

My understanding a revision is they take out hip and if infection is there antibiotics straps are put in you will not have a hip until infection is gone then a new hip is put in I have done so much research and find it could be multiple things all my Dr's say they don't know and tell me they don't know what else they can do for me I just think there all sticking together and don't want to go against each other I'm like you can't sleep on that side I have to sit a certain way now my back is so messed up from favoring my hip pain pills don't even help me anymore I'm been seeing young Dr's I'm looking now for and old one that has been around maybe they have experienced this some Dr's I've called said right off they don't do other Dr's revisions I'm almost at the end of trying I'm so sick of Dr's and test I never when to the dr inless I was bleeding or something bad since my surgery I've had over 50 different appointments with Dr's and test blood work I've had enough

OMG! I am so sorry! You are right about drs sticking together, whether they are right or not. They say my MRIs are find, x-rays are fine. Had 2 epidurals that did not help. And, they didn't accept insurance for those. I was stuck with $440. I swear they were placebos and told the dr. so. I felt no relief with the pain med before the epidural. And the epidurals did no good. Plus I had to drive from Simpsonville, KY to Clarksville, IN for these procedures. I dropped that pain dr. I have a new one, which I've seen once. She lied to me about my pain meds. Now she is leaving that practice and I have an appt to see a new pain dr! All this has been going on since March 1, 2023. I am so sick of it. I have a lot of responsibilities (pets) and can't afford to lay around all the time. I went to 13 sessions of pt which helped in the beginning, but I stopped because I was in a lot of pain. What do we have to do to get good medical treatment? I don't want another hip surgery, and lose another year of my life. I'm 69 and don't have a lot left anyway. And this fight with pain meds makes me so mad. They don't understand how withdrawal hurts you. With my pain drs changing, I haven't had a pill for 2 weeks! Taking regular tylenol. Doesn't help much, and really messes with my stomach and my IBS. Good luck with your situation. If I learn anything helpful, I'll let you know.

Have you tried a guided steroid shot to help with pain until you figure out what is wrong?

I had THR on right hip in 2018. It took awhile to heal. I had pain down the center of my thigh for months. It's been fine until a few weeks ago. I started getting the pain in my hip again. Went to my ortho PA and she ordered a CT scan which I'm getting on Friday. She also ordered a blood test as I told her even though I'm 82 I still have all my lady parts so concerned it's an ovary. I will say she just jumped on this. Maybe because she's a woman she didn't discount my concern about that.

Active 75yo with continued pain 1 1/2 years post op right hip replacement. Original doctor did not care at all about rehab. Have seen two other orthopedic doctors. I have a slight tear in one of my tendons per MRI, but I don’t think that is accounting for all the pain. Started going through PT again, and tried needling. Nothing really helps in the long term. I have also tried a pain doctor. A cortisone shot did not help. A Round of Cortisone did help but of course you can’t stay that forever. Has anyone tried PRP?

Had same thing post THR. Couple small tears on glute med tendon. Tried cortisone couple times. Was going to try prp but insurance doesn’t pay. After some investigation I ended up having severe spinal stenosis and had spinal fusion. Pain free now. My back never hurt but was all hip and leg numbness and pain. So glad I kept complaining.

Thanks I'm stuck in a Dr's war to I think but has to be someone out there that will step up and say it's my hip don't want another surgery either but if it will help me walk and get out of pain I'm ready to do it again

I just got the results of my hip CT which showed normal. Then what on earth is causing the pain. It's not horrible, but feels like I pulled a muscle in my groin which I know I didn't do.

I found a wonderful hip Dr! Dr Yesamides at Louisville Hip and Knee in Louisville. He took x-rays. Found bursitis and nerve pain. Put me on gabapentin and Prednisone. I am already doing much better! They really care. They explain everything to you. Dr "Y", what they call him is very caring of your situation and listens to you. He is so awesome! I highly recommend. He is Springhurst in the Meridian Bldg.
