Post-Covid dizziness/off-balance, as most troubling symptom

Posted by kirstenk2003 @kirstenk2003, Mar 30, 2022

I contracted Covid in December 2021 and am currently dealing with persistent dizziness (off balance, sometimes feels like swaying, rocking, spinning, or a pull to one side). My other most bothersome symptoms are ear ringing, headaches (pressure in the head), feelings of pressure change in my ears, trouble multitasking or thinking, along with developing anxiety/ depression and some elevated heart rate and blood pressure.

Dizziness was not a symptom of my initial infection. I developed dizziness (not BPPV) around January 15th. I saw a physical therapist who determined I had Vestibular Hypofunction and I began vestibular therapy. It seemed to be working and I even returned to my office job for about 3 weeks, restricted hours. Two weeks ago I began feeling worse again. My physical therapist believes my initial issue has improved - so he doesn't know what's causing my current onset of symptoms. I started an antihistamine to combat any allergy related ear fluid, along with an anxiety medication to try and improve my blood pressure and heart rate.

I'm going to see an ENT next, and hope that I haven't waited too long to try other remedies (if there are any). Has anyone else experienced this overwhelming dizziness and had positive results with treatment or answers as to the cause? I'm scared that this is going to be how I feel forever.

14 months ago I got a bad case of COVID and lost 1/3 of hair and all my smell. after that I woke up one morning with severe vertigo which landed me in hospital. they did CTs and MRIs echocardiogram and blood work and the result was oh you probably have a virus or a bacterial event and have hbp. hang tight it'll go away. vertigo went dizziness stayed. Saw 10 docs...
I was seen by a medical doctor a neurologist a PCP a med first from ear pain that gave me steroids which sent me back to the hospital again because I had a bad reaction. Went to ent and put cameras everywhere I e nose ears. Nothing. Saw chiropractor and acupuncture doc and eye doc and now phys therapist to no avail. Dizziness is debilitating and anxiety is terrible brain fog is
horrendous. I'm afraid I will never get rid of this. Life altering. Saw last doc that says I need a antidepressant cuz I'm severely depressed. One small thing I'm wondering from others is . Does anyone feel a little better at night after 9pm? Could b cortisol. I'm afraid to go to sleep at night because I know how bad I'm going to feel in the morning again. I tried non drowsy antihistamines but nothing...was taking natto but now taking NAC and ginko and c...d...b complex 3 days now.I almost give up.....I'm not same person...can't plan or do things and shopping for groceries is horrible as I can't look at so many things at one time....I hate life....

@simonsays101 yes I generally felt better at night, my symptoms would nearly disappear. Depending on how well I slept I would generally feel good for a couple hours and then my symptoms would show up again.

Best news for me though is that I discovered I had mold illness and not LC. I am 2 months into a 6 month program and feeling much better. Many symptoms of mold illness crossover to other illnesses compounded by most Doctors knowing the little to nothing about Mold Illness. I went about 3 years until I was properly diagnosed.

Hello, sorry to hear that! Lightheadness, disorientation and balance problems got worse for me over time. I went to ENT who said I did not have an inner ear problem, but, based on interview, balance problems likely due to light sensitivity and related headache.... in other words, long covid. I went to an acupuncturist who had covid and long covid and in three visits balance and disorientation improved by 90% and stayed that way. So you might give that a try!
Also, I always recommend Leo Galland MD's fabulous work on covid and long covid in a pdf on his website. You can download it and search for your symptoms and find recommendations for diet and supplements. He saved my life during debilitating symptoms after gastrointestinal Delta Covid. Delta also known as The Real Thing, lol. I can laugh now. I could not before! https://www.drgalland.com/ He is a functional medicine MD who has dealt with tough viruses for a long time!

I know exactly what you are dealing with. I have been dealing with severe light headedness and being off balance for several years. I was diagnosed with orthostatic hypotention..i.e. bloodpressure drops on standing. You have had various assessments so pehaps you were already checked for this. The standard treatment is simple..plenty of water, at least 2 litres a day, salt tablets and compression socks. Sticking to this for the last few months has not completely solved the issue but has definitely improved it.

@simonsays101 I spent almost 2 hours in a hyperbolic oxygen chamber. My life has gotten so much better since. I've gone through all you've mentioned and so much more.
