What places do you recommend to stay when at Mayo in Rochester, MN?

I stayed at Indigo in February and it was fine. It was a 15 minute walk from Mayo buildings all indoors skyway and subway. I appreciated the steps if
you are a walker you will enjoy the food, coffee and retail stores on the
way. I ate happy hour dinner in the Crave restaurant every evening and it
was fine food at bargain prices.

@jared237, where did you end up staying? What tips would you offer to others preparing to go to Mayo for the first time?

@jared237 Dont do it.

Its a dump. Unless you are in the high end suites its pretty outdated and dumpy.
I think they plan a remodel but I do not believe they have done that yet. Same for the Kahler inn and suites.

If you have a car , I would look at places away from the campus that offer free parking like Residence Inn (South campus by the mall ) , Home2Suites , Candlewood suites. The hotels have shuttles to take you to the Campuses. All the hotels near the campus will charge you nightly parking 15-30.00 nightly.

I will say the EVEN and Staybridge hotel across from St Mary's now charges 20.00 a night parking but you can opt to park on the street there or across in the lot for free or less. That is a newer SUPER clean nice hotel. Its Staybridge on one side and EVEN on the other. Has a pool gym hot tub and free laundry.

They have a shuttle as well.

I usually stay at the super 8. reasonable rates and reasonably clean. I'm a sort timer a night or 2. short drive to mayo and shuttle if weather is dicey. A block/easy walk from John Hardy's BBQ

Thanks for sharing your experience. The only thing I will add is to be careful about street parking around the hotels by St Mary's campus. They may have meters, some have restricted hours, and others require a resident pass to park on the street. By "resident," I mean they live on that street, and without enforcing resident parking, people on that street will not have parking due to high demand in that area.

I agree that a hotel with shuttles may be the best alternative.

I stay at the Homewood Suites on 13th Ave. it is clean and they have a Mayo discount but call the hotel directly because the central reservation number will have no idea of the discount and then the hotel gets too pricey at least for me. The hotel is quiet with a better than expected breakfast selection. They run a free shuttle. At the Gonda Bldg picking up the shuttle to return to your room is so simple. There are places to sit while you wait and a there is someone who calls out over a loudspeaker what hotel shuttle is pulling up. If you need a wheelchair getting off at Gonda it seemed like people were lined up to assist you with a wheelchair if you need it. If you are an outpatient I am not sure staying near the clinic is necessary but if an inpatient perhaps it would be more convenient for your family.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on 16th St because it was very close to St Mary's. You can see the entrance to the hospital from the parking lot; it was .2 miles/5-minute walk. Free parking and breakfast. Shuttle service. It was clean, nothing fancy. It was about a mile to the Gonda and other nearby buildings and I was able to walk - slowly- to all appointments. It was July, so we were unconcerned about having our car outside and having to navigate cold and snow.

I ended up staying at the Residence Inn and was very happy with it. The underground walkway was very convenient and fast. The staff were really friendly and they were very understanding that we didn't know how long we would be staying until we talked with the doctors, so they told us just to let them know if we would need to stay another night. I liked that the rooms had a full-size refrigerator, so I was able to keep leftovers to have for the following day.

I also liked that the public parking garage was right next door.

As for tips for others preparing to go to Mayo, I would recommend booking a room well in advance. I think there was a convention going on at the same time we were there, so some hotels filled up fast.
