Persistent productive cough for more than 1 year!

Posted by btsum68 (Blaine Summers) @btsum68, Dec 18, 2024

Hi, my name is Blaine, a 70 year old man. I have several issues with my mind, body, soul, +. I am here, hoping to find some answers/cures for what has disrupted my entire being for what seems like an eternity!
I would like to take one issue at a time, so I don't get confused, overwhelmed and frustrated! About a year ago I developed a productive cough that at times I cough so hard I pass out or I am unable to take in any air, so I am struggling to breath, my throat starts to get dry, so now I am gasping and seem to have no control over what is happening. This will sometimes be very persistent, then again, I might not have an episode for an hour or so. I have been to a Pulmonologist, had several tests done and COPD, Asthma, etc., basically all the tests that should be taken, have been with no prognosis. Like I said in the beginning, I have several issues as well as concerns and I don't want to be bombarded, so I would like to ask your help one item at a time unless anyone feels that all my symptoms are a packaged deal and that one thing might lead to another. I would like to thank you all in advance in hopes we will be able to help one another! Please let me know, if more info. is needed and I shall provide what I can! Blaine Summers

Do you have long covid?

Hi and thanks for responding. You know, I do not know what are the symptoms of Long Covid? I have had so many different tests and many possibilities for my ailments but it seems to me like when I see a new doctor for the first time, they seem eager/anxious to help, then the new wears off they lose interest and just throw pills to fix or temporarily relieve the symptoms!
I too like to search and research which I mostly do on the Mayo Website, then when I present to the doctors what I have found but I get laughed at and told not to believe what I find on the internet! Blaine Summers

My GERD creates a regurgitation that blocks my nasal passages and my throat leaving me gasping for air. I thought this was just part of having Pulmonary Fibrosis, but am learning that it is completely separate. My hiatal hernia is the culprit. Look into hiatal hernia regurgitation. Large volume acid reflux is what I am copiously spitting, coughing up, and blowing from my nose. A new medication and following the well-known "rules" of GERD are helping me. A surgery to alleviate hiatal hernia issues is in my future. Acid reflux and pulmonary problems are a terrible mix.

Hi, I have been diagnosed with all you mentioned plus. Would you say covering this with your PCP, or your pulmonologist in order to get the issues clear up? Thank you!

Make sure they all know: gastro, pulmonary, and primary care physicians need to know that you are expelling fluids that are blocking your airways. Regardless of any acid being blocked by medications such as omeprazole, you need to end the reflux ASAP because it is damaging to your lungs.

@btsum68 I have something similar. My ENT told me that because I have acid reflux, the acid is coming up and burning my vocal cords. My body is producing excess amounts of mucus to protect my throat. That mucus makes me cough, and choke so hard I vomit.
The answer is to take a teaspoon of liquid Mylanta before bedtime.

It works for me.

@celia16 acid reflux has been a problem for me for about 45 years.
My stomach burns, I feel pain in my chest, and sometimes my back. I take prescription medication.

It’s bad especially when you lie down…

I haven’t had that and my ENT looked down my throat….so….I wonder if I have the silent kind. Just in case, I eat a diet as if I do. Avoid sugar, grease, spicy, etc.

I’m sorry for all the health issues you’re going thru! Did the doctors rule out lung diseases?? (ILD)
I cough all the time but I have idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and I am on oxygen 24/7. I was diagnosed with IPF going on two years now when I was 63.
I find I cough less when I remain calm and in a peaceful environment, I rent a room so I am always in my room with my fur baby, he brings me great support and calmness and peace along with my God. I keep my oxygen in 24/7 I also have heart disease and I am on a CPAP but I do what I can and I pray and hope that each day can bring you some needed peace, God bless you and hang in there take it day by day,❤️ginger
