Parotid/salivary gland swelling and pain

Posted by denise @trnrmom1, Jan 4, 2024

i have an impaired immune system and have been a post-covid long hauler for almost 3 years tho my symptoms are manageable and not very severe; however, it seems i'm prone to parotid gland painful swelling that distorts right side of face up to ear but a round of antibiotics usually resolves these issues. i haven't seen too many long haulers write about this symptom and i'm wondering if any of you are dealing with this. my google research says it's immune system and bacteria related so i'm assuming the original covid virus is still in my body. will any of us be totally cured????

Thank you. Yes I have hives sometimes. Thyroid levels were checked but did not show anything...but I do know you have to keep checking levels. Anything with the thyroid is very hard to diagnose. I'm glad you are feeling better.

Actually, Thyroid levels are not hard to diagnose at all. Since you’ve had the blood test done already, you know it’s just a blood draw. I would have your levels checked again and possibly ask your Dr to give you the medication to treat the thyroid and see if you feel better. Sometimes the number the test shows is not how you’re feeling. Doctors need to listen more…

Yikes! I would get a second opinion from the best rheumatologist you can find. That is a crazy number of autoimmune diseases.

Yes it is a crazy amount. I have been diagnosed differently from several rheumatologist (5) Not one of them can agree on what autoimmune disease I actually have. So they just try different medications. So far the only one that has helped is an old drug hydroxychloroquine. The others they have put me on had terrible side effects. Now I'm afraid to try anything new.

I don't blame you. My sister, who does not have LC, but does have severe rheumatoid arthritis was on hydroxychloroquine for an extended period of time, but it stopped working after a while and she was switched to something else.

There is no reason why you should take anything I say as worth listening to. However, I can't recommend strongly enough to find the one best rheumatologist you can find and stick with them. You have too many cooks and I'm sure they're not collaborating on your situation.

Just sitting here watching tv and my left parotid gland is swelling by the minute. Go through this several times a year. One side, or both. Hurts soooo much. Tired of it and nobody gives me any reasons. I just live with it. 🙁

i have post covid long haul symptoms for 4 yrs. and i brush my teeth any time i put something in my mouth so i believe my mouth is as clean as it can be; however, i also get that painful parotoid swelling more frequently since having covid and i believe it's because of my body's inflammation from which i never recover. ent just prescribes antibiotics and they always work. i had a dds appt. about a month ago and asked the dds if he'd write another rx for antibiotics for my parotoid issues...his reply was that if it was covid related, he couldn't...and didn't. if you get any answers, please post here.

Have you seen an ENT. Ironically my bff had a salivary gland operation today to see why it’s swelling. Sometimes the fluid drains in to her mouth.

ENT’s, Auto-Immune specialists… I know one time it was stones but other times no reason anyone can find. It’s a 50/50 shot if it will be one side or both. I hope the surgery goes well!!! I’m on day 3 of pain and looking like a chipmunk. Very hard and frustrating! I’ve got things to do. 🙁
