Pancreatic insufficiency after Roux N Y gastric bypass

Posted by max2 @max2, Jul 29 10:43am

38 yrs post op from what is assumed to be a Roux N Y Gastric Bypass. Apparently caused by lack of full stomach and duodenum to utilize all enzymes, proteins and vitamins. This has resulted in lack of adequate protein amounts even when supplemented with pancreatic enzymes at each and every meal and snack. Just diagnosed with ‘possible cyst’ on pancreatic neck. Please weigh in if you have information. All my best.

Revision to bypass in 2018. I had sleeve in 2012. Since revision , I was tested 2 years ago and I have pancreatic insufficiency. Given Zenpep.. no change.

Thank you for helping me. Was a reason given as to why Zenpep? Also do you take it with every meal or snack?

I had Roux N Y Gastric Bypass about 13 years ago. During a scan of abdomen for another reason, they saw pancreatic and liver cyst, My mother died of pancreatic cancer so was concern, but providers were not concern.

What test did they run for pancreatic insufficiency?

After the roux N Y we do not have use of the duodenum which is the first part of the small intestine. My provider say no worries about cyst, they will give me enzymes to take before each feeding. The duodenum has several important roles in digestion and nutrients.
**Receives chyme: The stomach sends partially digested food (chyme) into the duodenum.
**Neutralizes acidity: The duodenum secretes bicarbonate to neutralize the acidity of the chyme.
Releases digestive enzymes: The pancreas releases enzymes (protease, lipase, amylase) into the duodenum to break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
Releases bile: The gallbladder releases bile into the duodenum to help digest fats.
****Absorbs nutrients: The duodenum absorbs most of the nutrients from chyme, including water, electrolytes, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins.
**Regulates digestion: The duodenum releases hormones (secretin and cholecystokinin) that signal the stomach, pancreas, and gallbladder to adjust their secretions.
So, having this part of stomach working is extremely important to your health as the duodenum is a crucial organ that receives chyme from the stomach, neutralizes its acidity, releases digestive enzymes and bile, absorbs nutrients, and regulates the digestive process.

Therefore, because of this I have massive deficits of needed nutrients that are important to your health. Apparently this is the same or will probably develop for all who have the Roux N Y procedure. A bariatric surgeon I contacted told me to “just take 2 multivitians a day.” I spend a couple hundred $ a month on supplements and lab work without a change.

Sorry. I got caught in responding and did not address your question well. I have test done every few months in trying to correct my deficients. The test for iron, b-12, b-1 and protein if low point to this issue.
