How do you cope with Overactive Bladder/Urge incontinence?

Posted by ainsleigh @ainsleigh, Mar 10, 2021

Does anyone have suggestions on how to cope with overactive bladder and urge incontinence? Are there any meds that can help without causing unwanted side effects?

You don't need a sterilized glove to apply cream into your vagina, a clean glove from the box is good enough. Concerning sterile/clean fields on the human body, the vagina is a known dirty area (similar to our mouth), and sterility is not required there.

Hi imallears,
My first time doing the vaginal cream. I was instructed to use the plastic tube that pumps the cream into a deeper part if your vagina.
Are you saying you figure our how much you need and use a gloved hand and reach reach inside to apply?

You don’t have to use the applicator, put on a disposable glove. Wash it with soap & water, I don’t think they are sterilized. Put a dab of the Estradiol cream on a finger and insert it yourself and rub it in. I do it every other day. The tube will last almost a year. Replace cap immediately, so it stays fresh.

Hi lindes,
So if the initial amount I am instructed to insert is 2 grams, I just put this on with the glove. That does sound less stressful!?!

Thank you Elizabeth. I hear nothing negative about the cream and yes, I believe and have confidence in what my Stanford Medical Center
Urogynocologist recommends. Thank you...!!!

I’m late to this discussion but I had an overactive bladder about 10 years ago and tried a medication from a urologist that did not work. I happened to be referred to a woman urologist who said I had the beginning of bladder prolapse...dropped bladder. I used Poise at that time to prevent leakage and accidents. Surgery or a pessary was the option.
About a year later when the prolapse had reached its final stage I got fitted for a pessary...took a couple of different fittings. I use vaginal estrogen twice a week when I remove the pessary . I have not had an uncontrollable urge or any problems with inserting or removing the pessary or with the estrogen...just a pea size amount twice a week. I don’t feel the pessary one bit. I was scheduled for physical therapy when I received the pessary but only went to the first session. I do pelvic exercises on a semi regular basis but I have gym classes during the week and walk and exercise daily.
I think everything combined helped me to return to normal. I can hold it in if necessary but don’t if I can help it.

Was just wondering if anyone here was ever told they had a prolapsed bladder and that it could be the cause. I am glad I never opted for the mesh surgery and that a simple thing like a $50 pessary was the answer.

Hope this helps someone else . BTW I have an 80th birthday coming up and have to keep checking my birth certificate for a typo. Old dogs can learn new tricks lol.

Thank you that helps me a bunch! I had a prolapsed uterus and had a hysterectomy. That I believe was caused by a 16 hr induced labor and high forceps delivery. After my second child with another difficult delivery my bladder dropped and was lifted. That was in 1979 so it was whatever procedure they used. It worked for 4 years and had to be repaired again. All has been well until about 10 years ago when it started to drop again. I did the PT and some drugs...don't remember what. Now I am having real trouble with urgency as well as interstitial cystitis. Because of my cirrhosis Stage 4, I cannot do the drugs and surgery is not high on my list. The pessary and PT seem to be my destiny. So glad to hear it worked so well for you. Can you or anyone add more details on this delicate subject?

@maflynn777 I use the plastic tube, think it's the only way to do what needs doing and get the med high enough. I have had hysterectomy, abdominal surgery to remove large benign tumor, vaginal tightening, vaginal birth with baby breech.....any one can contribute to this urethra weakening and incontinence. I'm praying this bulking injection will help and/or solve the problems. Don't need another sedation.

Apparently, the urethra muscle not closing properly is not common. But, any of above can cause. I'm obviously concerned as I also have some autonomic dysfunction and other issues that make all this concerning. This injections may be a blessing and help me through with better quality. Hope so.

@jeanne5009 Sounds like you've had several issues as well that can cause these problems. Suggestion: I was careful to see a urogynocologist who deals with these combination issues regularly. I think that's made a difference in the diagnosis and maybe the injections rather than other. And I thought I never needed a gyno again, after all the surgeries and now the emptiness in my pelvic area. Beginning PT next week, also.

Hope you get good answers and results, Jeanne.

blessings to you, elizabeth

As long as you can reach any critical area with your finger inside your vaginal canal, using a glove should be OK.

Yes, I have had some pelvic floor repair too. I had a great urogyn in Jax but then moved around all over Fl. I finally got hooked up with a good one I hope. Starting PT next week. I will report to all those who have these issues. Sooo much fun to be us!!

@imallears I was diagnosed with a prolapsed bladder about twenty years ago, and my story is similar to yours, except that several pessaries were tried by my Gynecologist with no success. I finally had the surgery involving the mesh procedure. I was much improved, but for the past few years I've been having problems again. I've read recently that problems have surfaced about the mesh causing issues of disintegrating somewhat within the tissue of the outer part of the bladder, and of course I worry that this might be my current problem. Has anyone had this experience?
