Osteoporosis treatment or strontium citrate?

Posted by bonelady @bonelady, May 10, 2018

Is reclast a safe treatment for osteoporosis I have not done anything so far except strontium citrate?

***Director's Note:***
There’s not enough research to know if strontium fights osteoporosis. Also, the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements in the same way as prescription drugs, so it's not possible to know if if they are safe or work well or even how much of the main ingredient they contain.

If you want to take a strontium supplement, it is recommended to ask your doctor first.

John, I grew up in Japan and know first hand about the low osteoporosis incidence rate there. The Japanese soil is amazing!! My dad had the best garden and we were so healthy growing up. There's something to be said about the boron content in our soil/water sources. Here in the USA, warnings are out about getting too much boron (recommendations are 3-5 mg max a day.) But in some countries the people get 70+mg per day just through their food/water....not to mention any additional supplementation! I don't think we have a good grasp on the "whole food supplement" idea in this country!

@debbiem Before the pesticides went into out soil and our soil was striped of all its nutrients I had a big garden in Pa. I did all my own canning and didn't have hardly any physical problems . Now that Im in Calif. and have no organic soil here I have lots of pain so I think there is something to what is in the soil now we have to get Boron in supplement and other but be careful of the supplier .

Totally agree!! I've researched awhile on Boron and actually found a compounding pharmacist who makes a great boron supplement....Hakala Research out of Wyoming. Ran into his wife at OsteoStrong.

Not a problem Migizii. I started taking 3 mg boron two or three times a day for osteoporosis, and noticed I got pretty close to zero pain from fibromyalgia and arthritis (I have both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis - and could barely use my hands for anything - and I've had five hip replacements and my shoulder has been done twice). Boron is a trace mineral that - according to legend - was more plentiful before the soil became depleted by over-farming. The upper limit in humans for boron is 20 mg a day, so we are staying well short of that. I have some printed stuff about boron, but it is quite lengthy (a bit long in the tooth if you ask me). Many of the people are using Borax instead - it is supposed to be better but I don't understand why. They put one-eighth teaspoon Borax in a liter of water and drink that. I have some material that talks about how that is dosed but if you want to get more information, the best place to get it is from the Borax group on Facebook. If you are on Facebook, do a search to Borax and it will come up - along with a fuzzy picture of the 20 Mule Team Borax box. You have to apply to get into any of these groups because otherwise they get taken over by trolls or bots or whatever is out there. They just ask you a couple of questions to make sure you are a human being. As to the brand, I'm using NOW, but there are some that are cheaper. It is, after all, just Borax. I would start with one or two a day - and see how it goes. I feel best using three 3 mg capsules per day in the winter; I plan to go down to 2 mg per day in summer, using it mainly for OA, RA, and FMS. I don't think it is the magic bullet for osteoporosis. I think K2 (mk4 mk7) might be the key. I'm going to get a DEXA scan in about 2-3 months - so I'll find out, I guess. I was -5.7 two years ago. I haven't been fracturing for about a year now.

Hi Parrotqueen, We had a very entertaining African Gray for 25 years. Walter (actually a girl) adored my husband and wouldn't let me near except when we experienced 2 earthquakes. Before developing severe osteoporosis, after a car accident, I developed fibromyalia. I thought that lifting weights the majority of my life and walking 4 miles a day would help to prevent illness. Sadly, I was mistaken. I am currently on bone supplements and a daily injection of Tymlos. Also, my functional doctor gives me magnetic treatments. He wants me off the Tymlos, but my bone density score is 4.3 in my spine and hip. My bone specialist told me falling would be fatal. My best option is the daily shots. Your reply to Migizili about boron intrigued me. I would appreciate knowing who your supplier is so that I could be assured the supplement is pure. Thanks, so much, for your input. It is very valuable to so many of us suffering from similar medical conditions! Curly Locks 🙂

Thank you so much for this information. So, from what you’re saying, I could take this in supplement form and possibly get some pain relief! I so appreciate your suggestions!

@parrotqueen . When we first met on here and I realized your credentials and I know medical language as Im a retired nurse of 35 yrs working O.R. E.R. and other parts including med. records. I listened to your research and did some of my own. I started with 2 ,3 mg Boron for my fibro and O.A. now I only take 1 3 mg. a day with my other Bone meds. ONe thing I found out also was the Peanut OIl I buy from Baar.com its a Edgar Cayce catalogue I don't think it has the same qualities as just OTC oil. I massage it into my bone joints and this really helps also my backbone that was weak is now strong.

That is absolutely amazing - I have to remember to do that. But my joints don't ache at all now since I started the boron. I should get some for my wrists. My wrists are very tiny and the right one fractured two years ago. I remember you worked as a nurse. It is very empowering to learn about herbs and vitamins and minerals and all good things to encourage our bodies to feel good every day. It is still difficult to find good information about boron. One thing I would say Lioness is that you may be okay with just the 3 mg of boron. but stay aware of how you feel. I went down to one and then when the pain came back, I forgot about boron and went back to the pharmaceutical meds that didn't really deal with the pain. Maybe it was just me - I've been through a lot medically in the past fifteen years and I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Oh goodness what a small world - I had two African Grays myself! One of them talked a blue streak and I miss him so much. Once a parrot loves you, everybody else has to get out of the way. They really love you intensely when they love you. I guess a few of us are in California - YAY California! Sp Curly Locks - I use the NOW brand. I am a member of ConsumerLab.com, which is a consumer watchdog group for supplements, and they also post hundreds if not thousands of medical journal articles about the vitamins, minerals and herbs - what has been observed or tested for - efficacy - the usual. It's great information. They test the major brands and tell you what is approved and what is not. I became a member when maybe a dozen years ago there was lead in four or five brands of turmeric on the market. It's interesting to note that there is too much lead in some calcium supplements - AlgaeCal is one of them. They have improved, but sill have a little more to go before they will get approval again. But I digress. My DEXA scan score was -5.7. I researched the bone drugs like you are using, and what I learned was too disturbing. I needed real help. In addition to the supplements, I am on a very low dose of estrogen and progesterone. Also, my bone loss was probably caused by (a) my very bad addiction to diet soda all through my teen years and until I was 64 years old, and (b) I had a pituitary tumor my entire life that wasn't discovered until a couple years ago. It robbed my body of thyroid and adrenal functioning, and I didn't have enough human growth hormone. All my muscles wasted out of my body and I wound up on a ventilator! I'm coming back from that. I am followed very closely at UCSF. I am hoping to go back off the estrogen once I get to a respectable DEXA score. I just needed some quick help as I was fracturing. As I understand it, these bone strengthening drugs mostly look like you are growing new bone because it doesn't allow the old, dead bone to leave the system. It hangs around your bones and makes it look like your bones are more substantial. However, when you go off the medication, you pee out all the old bone as you would normally do and you are left with no progress on growing bones. I was thinking you could do the nutritional supplementation at the same time as the Tymlos - but I"m not sure if your body can absorb both. You can only do the estrogen thing if you don't have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. I was put on birth control pills when I was 15 (I had very painful ovulation and periods) - so having extra estrogen in me has been the story of my life. One more thing I do for my body that is HUGE in saving bones is I don't eat sugar. I don't even eat fruit or bread, no beans (they are high in sugar). I have to do this because I am on a low dose of steroids for my adrenal insufficiency, and the steroids led me to candida overgrowth. Candida is fed by sugar - so it makes sense the way to control it is by not feeding it sugar, by taking probiotics, and herbal antifungals. I can't believe what a difference going off sugar has been to my body! I feel like I'm 20 years younger than my years. It's amazing! I was circling the drain before I went off sugar. And now I am reminded there is one more thing I do for my body - I take probiotics twice a day. I've seen many nutritionists say to take probiotics for bone growth. Hippocrates said "All disease begins in the gut," and I'm pretty sure he is right. Did you know you have more neurotransmitters in your gut than in your brain? 95% of your serotonin is found in your bowels! The gut is responsible for how you feel emotionally! It is fascinating. You are so lucky to have a functional doctor. I hope the boron relieves some of your pain.
