Osteoporosis quite severe if I started hrt now will it help . I am 74

Any other woman of a similar age to myself with osteoporosis found hrt helpful quickly? I am just so scared of the other drugs. I have had no fractures yet but I feel they are imminent !!

I would give bhrt a try for sure.

I discussed this with an endocrinologist and osteoporosis md. Both said the same thing. You will get no improvement in bone density. It might hold what you have for awhile. Prolia for me was very successful. I went from severe osteoporosis at age 57 to barely osteopenia in 4 years. But after 12 years on it I started breaking bones again. Both doctors said the side effects of HRT will outweigh the small benefit. So I will go back to oral Fosamax and keep up weight bearing exercise. I cannot do Evenity or Reclast- trued and horrible side effects.

@pattybaehr I have been on HRT for 3 years. Increased my bone density by 5%. Estradiol stops bone breakdown. No side effects. A functional doctor can give you more information. Traditional doctors are not trained on HRT.

I am very sensitive to meds and don’t currently take anything except the odd mild painkiller occasionally if I have to. My dexa score is not bad on hip -2.9 but total spine score -3.7 with a very low L 3 score a -4.7 this seems to have escalated madly in last three years.

I am very sensitive to meds also. Take a half dose of meds for allergy etc which work fine and ok by my Dr. Took prolia with awful side effects, severe fatigue, constant allergy systoms whic my allery pills did not help, itching, dry mouth, worse anxiety. After 1 dose my dr said not to take another and increase calcium and Vit D. It would be nice to take a smaller dose for sensitive but that does not exist. I think some dose may be better than no dose, maybe not as bad side effects.

@jdh5 I posted the bhrt message a long time ago. I found that the bhrt didn’t really agree with me. Since then I have only been taking pure fortibone every day , sensible diet but hardly any dairy , made up for it with kale , broccoli, nuts , porridge etc. protein in fish and chicken . I have had a spinal fusion major op with screws and cage and mine bones were strong enough to take it . I walk for exercise as can’t exercise with weights due to op recovery and sacrum problems . I am 75 so fingers crossed I keep strong . But no osteoporosis meds for me for as long as I can carry on like this . I am only 48 kgs and too sensitive to meds also .

@tiny28 I can so understand why you would feel beaten right now. At 75 it is a big deal and your body might need longer to recuperate. Also, maybe physical therapy might help the change in your body. I hope your able to start feeling better.

@mo215 I am 69 and did two years of Forteo. Hoping for follow-up help w severe back pain now. Did an infusion afterwards. Bit of a disconnect between bone health and spinal problems w hospital radiology departments. My insurance company told me no preauthorization is needed for a follow-up DEXA scan but the hospital radiology department told the Dr’s office it was not allowed. I even told the hospital radiology that I could pay for it and my insurance company said ok. Still total disconnect. Very frustrating. I am going elsewhere and looking for a place that does address osteoporosis and spinal help together.

Forteo (generic in my case) did build bone back. I am 69. I think Medicare covers it. Verify of course.

I am 78 and just finished a year of Evenity--infusions every month for 12 months. I have had a report of my DEXA that it increased my bone, more in my spine and some in my femoral neck and some in my total hip. Now they say I have osteopenia instead of osteoporosis. Now I am deciding how to maintain my increases. I could take Reclast which is once a year. In order to do that I checked with my dentist to make sure I didn't need any dental work. You are not supposed to have any oral surgery done if you take this. I checked with my dentist and an orthodontist and they are saying I am ok. I do weight-bearing exercise and take my Calcium, Magnesium, K2 and D3, also Preservision Areds 2, because of family having macular degeneration. I wonder if I should take a different drug or just keep taking the supplements and not another alendronate (is that spelled right?) I was taken off of hrt many years ago and now I wish I had stayed on it. I don't know whether anyone my age can get back on it. I have heard that it is hard to get anyone to prescribe that. Anyone have any info to share with me?

Hello! I am also in my early 70’s but have never taken HRT. After 3 years of being rather sedentary after a complicated knee replacement, my BMD scores plummeted to one point away from osteoporosis. I have had a very active lifestyle prior to the knee surgery. I reached out to an endocrinologist and was refused to be seen to even discuss it because I was nor osteoporotic yet. My old retired GYN guy told me that while maybe HRT was an option, I would be better to consider other bone meds to prevent progression and may have to do them anyway. I am anticipating a third cervical neck surgery and my neurosurgeon has set me up with a bone health professional that I have a video visit with next week to discuss this issue. So do not know if HRT is an option after you’ve had other bone meds and now that you have improved to osteopenia whether HRT is now an option. Keep me posted!
