Occipital Neuralgia

Posted by jmb73 @jmb73, Sep 11, 2019

I have been having headaches on one side of my head and have recently been diagnosed with occipital neuralgia. They recommend a nerve bloc but I wonder anyone else has this and how they handle it.. I don't want a nerve bloc. The headaches are usually mild but occasionally the pain wakes me up. They got worse after I had my Gamma surgery. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

It felt like it had scalded my nerves. I have had Fibromyalgia 22 Yrs and I’ve read that everyone with it has food and chemical sensitivities. That includes food additives, certain foods, injections, creams and inhalants. So that would be why ppl like me have blogged that lidocaine injections hurt the nerves permanently, esp in winter. Lidocaine may not bother your pain level if u are not sensitive to it.

The lidocaine IS what caused the intensity of pain. My doc just won't recognize it. I wrote about this above.

I am sensitive to meds, foods, chemicals so perhaps that explains it.

You said ur pain is mild so I would do nothing except con’t with PT and avoid spicy foods, citric acid in supplements, vinegars, caffeine, chocolate and any food or substance that you notice makes the nerve start hurting. I’m winter protect the nerve from cold air.

My pain is intense and agonizing twenty four hours a day and I’m severely sleep deprived and sweating profusely and soaking wet from nerve damage which also causes excessive itching and I’m scratching off all my skin.

@foxylloyd is anyone helping you? What docs do you see and what meds have been tried? Other modalities? I am so sorry.

I have a doctors that take care of me but all I really take is Norco which makes my pain worse because fibromyalgia and peripheral neuropathy patients are opioids intolerant. And Lyrica and Baclofin and Cymbalta and a few others

How awful for you! My heart hurts for you! I too have Baclophen on hand prn. My dr offered me Cymbalta but I have not tried it yet. I take Lyrica three times a day.
Would you recommend Cymbalta? How are u doing on it?
Has your dr discussed Mast Cell releases with you? Mast Cells release Histamine when we eat a food our body is intolerant of. Histamine makes me then red all over for an hr, then the painful itching starts. As soon as I feel a Mast Cell release getting started I take an Allegra 24 hr caplet. That prevents Mast Cell releases. So we need to stay on 24 Hr Non-drowsy Allegra all the time.

And avoid foods high and moderate in Histamine. Unfortunately there are many. You can Google about these foods.
