Kicked in the head, now I have a new type of seizure?

Posted by terbrown @terbrown, Oct 23 8:01pm

I was diagnosed with right temporal lobe deja vu seizures at 21, still get the deja vus but medicated to not have grand mals. Not DMV suspended. I am now 41 and the beginning of this year was kicked in the head by a pt when changing him 1ft away directly in forehead. And now I have my deja vus and now i get absent seizures. Between 90 to 120 sec ea. I become amnesic for 2-3min and then come back. I am done driving for now. Mri, ct, were neg for fluid. My in home eeg did finally capture 2 absent showed origination to right temporal lobe then to right hemisphere with left side hemisphere activity. But my question is..CAN YOU GET ANOTHER TYPE OF SEIZURE BY GETTING KICKED IN THE HEAD? Because now I have 2. I am so upset 🙁 My neurologist says its from my age and me getting older. But I have never had them until I got kicked in the head. I have had 12 since Jan. Please any help is appreciated.

Good Morning!
First, welcome to our community at Connect!
My understanding is that a head trauma can potentially trigger another type of epilepsy and seizures. Last year, I had a fall in my bathroom, and my neurologist immediately ordered brain imaging to check for any internal bleeding or injury in my brain.
Has your doctor ordered any imaging tests following the kick to your head?

They just did a ct w/o contrast and showed nothing but my usual.

Good Morning!
I just checked—the imaging exams my doctor ordered after my bathroom fall were with contrast.
What explanation did your doctor give for these new types of seizures you started having after the head injury?

My neurologist said the new seizures are occurring in the same area where my deja vu are. But I dont believe her bc I was always just having deja vus on the right side. But the eeg showed these absent on right side with left sided also. I thought that meant something else. But she is stuck to her word. That's why I am seeking other advise/second opinions.

Good Morning @terbrown
Very good idea—I would have done the same. If I were in your situation, I would try to see an epileptologist rather than just a neurologist.
Do you already have some options in mind?

Good Morning!
Have I understood correctly that doctors are hesitant to treat you because of concerns about potential legal liability given your profession? If so, I'm sorry you're facing this challenge.
Dan (@dannoyes), another member of our group, is currently being treated at Mayo Clinic and has been very satisfied. I think connecting with him could be helpful.
Another alternative to help you find a new doctor close to your area could be the Epilepsy Foundation Helpline: https://www.epilepsy.com/helpline.
I hope you find a good doctor soon who can give you the care you deserve!

Good morning! I have temporal lobe epilepsy. My seizures started as just not being able to communicate properly during my seizures. That was in 2007. I didn't have any other head injuries besides bumping my head on steel shelves at work. In 2016 I had an absence seizure. I talked with my neurologist about it. My seizures are never the same anymore. Just had an eeg and my right finger started moving with that seizure. He explained that temporal lobe seizures can gradually change over to generalized seizures over time. He explained that if it starts when you are an adult that is normally what happens. I didn't like hearing that, but he also said as long as the medication works it can hold it back. I hope you can find meds that help. Absence seizures are scary. I hope this is just a small bump in the road for you. I hope you can find a doctor like mine who can explain things and work on the positive side of things with you. I hope you are back to your normal life quick.
