Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use
i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

After reading all the above I did some research and found that a lot of people recommended Gavison it has Sodium Alginate, Sodium bicarbonate, Calcium Carbonate but you have to make sure that you buy it from the UK as the American one does not have this in it.
I just ordered some off Amazon so I will let everyone know how it works it had great reviews. Not cheap but if it works?
Oh, that does sound gross. I've never tried it before (I saw it on a list of supplements that may help with reflux), and I always assumed it was taken in capsules.
I understand the name for the Gaviscon with alginate is Gaviscon Advance. I recommend using that, it creates a barrier so the acid doesn't irritate your esophagus. The advice of @windyshores is good.
FYI- I am also on thyroid meds taken early morning on an empty stomach and take reflux gourmet before bed. As long as there is a 4 hour window between the 2 meds, Dr. says it’s okay . It’s helped me with nighttime reflux and weaning off other ppi’s and other meds.Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for the info I had no idea as long as she waited for hours? Do you take the gel all the gum? Does the gel stick in your teeth?

Recently weaned off a 20 mg Omeprazole dosage taken twice daily as advised by gastroesophageal specialist.
The schedule was:
First week: one pill daily x 7 days
Second week: one pill every other day x 7 days
Third week: one pill first day, then skip 2 days, take one pill, then skip 2 days, then take one pill and stop process.
For the next 7 days I'm finding it difficult for me to sleep through the night and for several days I've experienced severe shortness of breath. Was this process too fast? How will I know if the weaning process was successful? Live alone so there's no one other than the specialist to reach out to. Next appointment with specialist is not until 6 months from now and he does not seem concerned with what I am experiencing. Any advice/comments from other readers
Take the Carmel flavor gel at night. Tastes so much better than gaviscon advance /aniseed.Though I have alternated them at times (different months ) like taste of reflux gourmet better. I also just started (because of someone’s suggestion from here) (thank u),trying some slippery elm drops in my alkaline water. I sip the water all day to keep pepsin at bay. I watch carefully what I eat , (hard to figure out my triggers) how much (1/2 of what I used to eat )and when , (3-4 hours before bed.)Also, Chewing food and eating slowly is important.. I tried it all. Meds, antacids don’t agree with me and have osteoporosis so not good for the bones.I have lpr,( resp. Reflux),silent reflux. I had hiatal hernia repair and partial fundplication 15 months ago. Wrap is intact but dr thinks it loosed a bit hence some reflux has returned at times and surgeon suggested alginate to help.Walking and any stress release also helps. Hope this helps.thanks so much for all ur suggestions.💕🤸♂️
You might need to take Pepcid/famotidine before bedtime. Successfully weaning just means not having rebound i.e. higher than average acid, but if you have reflux on a regular basis without the omeprazole then you need to address it. If Gaviscon advance/tums is not enough then take Pepcid/famotidine before bed. good luck
What is "carmel flavor gel"? Is that the correct name of it?
I sometimes drink pomegranate juice and that helps symptoms too.
