Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use
i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

Hi. I too have had to wean off of a ppi at large doses. My dr did it much slower. My weaning was over 4 months. So had no side effects. Good luck! It will get better. I’m on Pepcid now. It definitely helps. Changed my diet and sleep on an incline with several pillows. You’ve got this! 😊😊😊😊😊😊

5 ReactionsDependence on omeprazole needs to be reduced gradually. I used to take one pill (20mg) a day, but now I hardly take omeprazole, and instead I take Pepcid (10mg) once every two days.

1 ReactionMy functional med dr suggested /urged slippery elm capsules rather than PPIs. Which I took in capsule format for many years I have recently been diagnosed with collagenous colitis.. .one of the causes....you got itPPIs!. Now suggested I take it in powder format vs capsules....1 1/2 tsp in a cup of water. Husband was on prison as well. Cardiologist urged slow weaning c I'm on old nurse. Original order for PPIs was 2 weeks unless diagnosis was barrels esopagitis ir ZE...Zollinger Ellison. Of course it was big pharma who stated Ppis safe to use long term.. just do a really slow weaning

2 ReactionsI got myself off PPIs by completely changing my diet. It was, and still is, difficult, but well worth it. I eat whole food plant based. No processed foods. Very hard to do. I made the mistake of eating one Boston cream donut and got a big surge of acid reflux. No more donuts for me. I can eat a small amount of 85% dark chocolate, but I stay away from sugar and flour in general. Avoid foods that cause inflammation -dairy grains. It is tough, but I feel great.

1 ReactionI was taking 40 mg protonix for years and it didn't seem to help. Just went through bad bout for 2 months reflux, 8 months after I stopped an antidepressant which I wish I'd never done....seems the year I took that I had no problems. New gastro is weening the protonix to every other day for a week then stop replaced with 40 mg OTC pepcid. I have break thru reflux. Not real bad but enough to bug you. Wants me to do this until I have the endoscopy which hasn't been scheduled as yet. Not sure what happens after that. Good luck.

1 ReactionAt some point you may want to try Reflux Gourmet. Can purchase on Amazon. Fixed my LPR I had for over a year. All natural, take after meals and before bed. Worth a try.

1 ReactionI have been on 40mg of Protonix for 30 years recently I saw a nutritionist who gave me natural supplements and I am now taking 20mg. I have cut out tomatoes and onions, which may be is helped. I have the occasional small attack and I just take Tums. I would also like to totally get off them because I know they cause dementia and that is some thing I think about constantly, especially when I can’t remember anything. I also tried to go off them an alternate 20 mg every other day, but same thing my stomach was really bad I think I’m going to reflux gourmet and see how that works for me

1 Reaction@jeanadair123 try using Zantac or Pepcid on the alternate days, then slowly replace to Protonix days with those other meds. The H-2 inhbitors like Zantac and Pepcid are easier to get off overall and can be taken as needed, eventually. They can temporarily, slowly, replace the Protonix and then you can taper those (they can be cut in half or quarter etc.). Eventually maybe you can just take Tums as needed!
