Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use
i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

Sorry it was some years ago and I don't remember my dose. Tapering helped with the rebound. It probably took me two months or so to transition to Pepcid and then taper that but I don't recall. Hope you can do this!
Thank you again. It's nice to hear other people got better .
It was actually my dad who was/is recovering from a stroke. I believe he was taking 20 mg, twice a day.
I basically did a ton of Googling and used this as a reference from the VA: https://www.va.gov/wholehealthlibrary/tools/coming-off-a-proton-pump-inhibitor.asp#:~:text=Slowly%20taper%20off%20the%20PPI,technique%20such%20as%20deep%20breathing.
There are some suggestions for supplements that can help with dyspepsia and acid reduction. Specifically, my dad takes Iberogast, which is an herbal blend that’s been clinically studied for use for dyspepsia and IBS. It’s over the counter but for some reason unknown to me, it isn’t available in the US but is available widely in Canada and Europe. It was recommended by my dietician. We order it online from Northern Vitality.
It was a while ago, but I think it went something like this:
-Alternate taking 40 and 20 mg for two weeks.
-Then take 20 mg every day for 2 weeks.
-Alternate 20 mg every other day.
-Take 20 mg 3x a week, then twice a week, then after that he stopped.
The rebound acid was maybe 2 weeks? But he was also taking the Iberogast.
Hope that helps!
That looks like another good taper. Using Pepcid with that taper may also help. It is shorter acting and can eventually be taken only as needed.
There’s a strong collection of experiences here that should help you decide on a taper path. Good luck!!
I use OptiMag 125 and K+2Potassium in the evening. Medication is a foreign substance in our bodies and if you read the labels of most laxatives they say not to take for more than a week. Consider adding a Naturopath to your health team. Good luck, @farmersmith
Check with your pharmacist as to whether you can cut your pills in half. If you can, you can go for example from 20 mgs to 10 mgs. I could cut my pills and eventually quartered them. If you need to taper more slowly, see if you can get a prescription for a compounding pharmacy. That way the pills can be made to order. Good luck!
I cut Pepcid pills, if that helps.
The generic Nexium I took were capsules and you can’t divide those.
Nexium is a PPI. Pepcid is an histamine-2 blocker. I cut Pepcid after tapering the PPI and transitioning to Pepcid, then I tapered off the Pepcid by cutting the pill in 1/2 then 1/4.
