not producing ketones to get into ketosis

Posted by mllesheryl @mllesheryl, Nov 13, 2023

I am new to intermittent fasting. I have fasted for one week for min of 16 hours up to 20 or even 24 hours. I have lost 1.5- 2 pounds. I have checked my glucose and ketone level in the morning and then before the first meal of day.
Only once did the keto-mojo tester register low ketosis. I have about 10 pounds to lose and am post menopausal. Am reading and watching you tube and everyone speaking about IF. Since I am very new to this maybe others have insight. I feel better through fasting. Wondering if I need to fast over 24 hours to lose more weight and see ketosis? Or just continue and keep fasting for more weeks?

I try to follow intermittent fasting, however i don’t do glucose or ketone testing. Dr. Valther Longo at USC has developed a program called Prolon. It is a 5 day fasting mimicking diet. I heard about it from a friend of mine who was prediabetic and her dr. recommended it. Prolon is not designed for weight loss, but it is a celleular reset to promote autophagy and healthy aging. I believe the website is Prolon FMD. Dr. Longo has several publications and at least one book The Longevity Diet

Hi @mllesheryl, Welcome to Connect. I'm a believer in intermittent fasting since I was introduced to it a few years ago. I've had a life long struggle with weight and tried many different diets and programs including Weight Watchers which did help me lose a major portion of my 330 pounds at the time I started. I then struggled going back and forth between 250 to 280 pounds until I read a health blog entry by @LeeAase called An Unfortunately Named Book - https://www.social-media-university-global.org/2020/02/an-unfortunately-named-book/. It introduced me to Dr. Jason Fung and intermittent fasting. I've been stuck at a weight or gained some a couple of times while doing intermittent fasting. What has helped me was doing a few days at 20/4 to give me a kick start. Another problem could be what you are eating. I did many years of WW and having my weight go up and down. Intermittent fasting along with low carb healthy fat eating is what really turned things around for me. This is one of the videos that helped me.

Don’t worry about the Ketosis. The weight will come off with intermittent fasting and low carb/high fat diets.

It was supposed to be IF for intermittent fasting.

I also never get into ketosis, even though I keep my carbs below 20 a day. As @juanmendez42 said, it will start to come off. You only have a small amount of weight to lose, so it will be slow. I always had luck with IF until I got Covid, so once I was diagnosed pre diabetic, I cut down on my carbs. It has taken me 8 weeks to lose 8 lbs doing IF & low carb. Good luck & keep at it!
