Non pain related personal discussions

Posted by medic7054 @medic7054, Aug 25, 2017

I am strongly considering opting out of this forum. I, on average get 20-30 emails per day by people using this as their own personal "chat room. I thought this forum was for CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERERS discussing their pain issues and various treatments. Not talking about their darn DOG, among other non pain related. These people are giving me more pain.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Chronic Pain Support Group.

@marield65 and @medic7054,

I have heard your concerns regarding the posts about family, pets, and other general topics in daily life. If you are only replying by email, I highly suggest you click on VIEW & REPLY in your notification to be taken to the website so that you can see all of the discussions on the Connect website. This notification, and the conversation you are currently taking part in, is centered around the idea that it is for personal discussions. If you do not want to receive notifications for this particular discussion, at the bottom of your email notifications, click on "Unsubscribe from this thread."

Connect has many groups and this discussion is one of many in the Chronic Pain group. Within the Chronic Pain group, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/pain/, there are many individual discussions taking place. Members have the ability to start discussions on whatever topics they choose because Connect is member generated. Members do not have to participate in any discussion he or she does not want to, however, when a member replies to a discussion he or she is automatically subscribed to receive email notifications for that discussions.

@medic7054, thank you for starting this thread, even though I know it was not your intention to create a new conversation (you were voicing concerns over how Connect was being used). I suggest clicking on "Unsubscribe from this thread," on the bottom of this email notification to stop receiving emails for this topic.

Members, please remain respectful to all members on Connect. Each of us finds value in Connect in different ways, and we cannot demean one-another for the way that another member uses Connect. From our community guidelines, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/community-guidelines/:

Remain respectful at all times.
- Exercise tolerance and respect toward other participants whose views may differ from your own. Disagreements are fine, but mutual respect is a must.
- Realize that sarcasm and joking will often be misunderstood.
- Personal attacks against members or health care providers are not acceptable. Such posts will be removed.

Emails can be overwhelming at times, but it is a sign of a healthy community. As a community grows, so does its number of members, which means more participation and more notifications. If the emails become overwhelming or you are participating in a discussion you do not want to receive emails from, use the Unsubscribe from this thread function at the bottom of your notifications. We are working on a more plausible solution long-term. Please remain respectful to other members at all times.

Justin, I'm addressing this to the people you are trying to placate. May I draw your attention to an article put out by Mayo Clinic today about the Benefits of Pet Therapy?  If people haven't tried it, please don't knock it.  I am schooled in the Scientific Method, so I don't believe everything I hear.  But my rescue cats are so valuable and helpful to me.  Who rescued who?, is the question.  @marylou705

@marylou705,

My dog was a major companion for me during my recovery from knee replacement surgery and fusing my left ankle as well. It is amazing how they sense your struggles, whether it be physical or emotional, and try to comfort you. He is a Rat Terrier (they are as crazy as advertised, so beware). I tried searching for the article you are referencing and Mayo Clinic has a lot of different articles regarding animal therapy! Here is one I think you may like, https://www.facebook.com/MayoClinic/posts/10153476303277517.

Thanks Marylou and Justin, there is no better unconditional love than from a pet

Marie, thank you for saying what you just did and there's absolutely no hard feelings. You have said some very kind things to me personally and I have appreciated them. When I read what you said about not being able to go out like you'd like to, being uncomfortable about taking a pill at the table, etc. I got tears in my eyes because I felt exactly the same way. I think it was good for you to say what you did because you needed to. I need to say the same kind of things. I've lost a lot in my life that used to be something I just took for granted. I've had to do a lot of adjusting and believe me I also have said things to people I love that I shouldn't because I'm just hurting and don't know what to do to make it go away. It's really hard to stay yourself when you really don't feel well. All is good and I'm glad you're here. Jennifer
