No insurance coming from out of state

Posted by mindfulintentions @mindfulintentions, Feb 5, 2023

Anyone else experience this? Was it easy to arrange a payment plan? Im nervous, if i didnt need help so bad id rough it out.

Its my understanding its harder from out of state? No income coming in after a job loss, but what do you do, keep suffering?

Would love to hear feedback on this.

@mindfulintentions, I suggest you contact the Billing & Insurance Department at Mayo Clinic to discuss self-pay and payment options.
- Insurance & Billing https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/billing-insurance

The link I provided offers information in a section called "Uninsured (self-pay) or underinsured patients", which states:
"Uninsured discount
Mayo Clinic's Uninsured Discount Policy will supplement the Mayo Clinic Charitable Care and Financial Assistance Policy, which provides financial assistance. All Mayo Clinic sites will offer discounted prices to qualified uninsured patients for medically necessary care.

Eligibility is contingent upon patient cooperation with efforts to apply for available Medicaid, Medicare or other Medical Assistance programs.

The uninsured discount will apply to medically necessary inpatient and outpatient services for patients residing in the United States. The discount will not be offered to international patients or for cosmetic or elective procedures that are not medically necessary.

Financial assistance
In order to apply for financial assistance, patients will be required to apply for their state medical assistance (Medicaid) plan. Please know that the difference of these rates do not apply to your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. Before your insurance pays, you will owe your co-insurance, copay and difference between the rates."

This is general information. Don't hesitate to contact them directly to discuss your situation and get answers specifically for you.

I had called to make an appointment but was told they were booked for 3 months and could not schedule one now. Then I waited 3 months before mailing a request for an appointment. The response was I would hear back in 3-5 days. They called me 5 days later and asked 3 questions - my name, date of birth, and insurance. When I told them Aetna Medicare I was told ‘Mayo does not accept that insurance’ - end of discussion. No mention of self pay, Etc.

Its really interesting though I was told today I have to pay 5k , then supplement with another 5k before I can even try to apply for financial aid which is only 25% off.

I wasnt even told there was a wait at all she just wanted to know if i wanted to move ahead. Its pretty disheartening that you cant even get help until you shell out 10k and then its 25% . Pretty crappy for anyone that needs help and has an income barrier but doesnt qualify for Medicaid. Barriers to access based on income issues: discrimination and I feel like i expected way more from a facility like this.

As if that wasnt bad enough I was told only some providers would even consider Tricare select or standard but not prime and that most providers dont "deal" with Tricare insurances. Military family friendly: nope. Im a vet and a mother of 3 dependents that was a military child: horrible practice I feel Mayo restricting based on income and picking and choosing around service related insurance when dependents dont always have the money on a GI paycheck to afford private insurance. Total discrimination and makes me wonder if care is based on need or who has insurance that pays more.

We deserve better, and I was told this was better: is it?

The wait times for appointments will differ from department to department, depending on demand for appointments and capacity of the department.
