nHCM Medicationdor Angina

Posted by jimnhcm @jimnhcm, Dec 17, 2025

I'm interested in others with nHCM who have been able to control Angina with medications;
What medications are you currently on?

What protocol did you follow to arrive at your current state, free of angina?

Thanks for your help as I flounder about trying to figure this out.

Hello @jimnhcm and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. This is a great place to connect with others who share your same condition. I found it so helpful to me, personally, to know I was not alone with this weird heart condition.

We are all different. That's a safe bet! And since we are, that means no two of us will be identical with reaction to medications, treatment or symptoms.

For many, being prescribed beta blockers is the very first stop on their HCM journey. It can work for many, and for some, not so much. I had a difficult time on them. I didn't like how they made me feel, and probably tried about four or five different ones with little to no success. But again...we are all different.
Angina is scary!
I was never free of it. Before I was diagnosed with HOCM, there were days I thought I might not make it.
Then I had open heart surgery and a septal myectomy.
Never had angina after that, and I am not on any meds other than a low dose aspirin 81mg.

I get what you mean by floundering about trying to come to terms with your new condition.
I would suggest learning as much as you can about what is living inside your heart. That way you can be a better educated advocate for yourself and help with decision making going forward.

I posted a link to Mayo Clinic that has some great information to get you started:

Is your cardiologist specialized in treating HCM? That is super important for your future treatment...

Thanks for your reply. My concern with nHCM is that I'm not a candidate for surgery like HOCM per Mayo after the 2 heart Cath.

Only symptoms can be managed so I'm trying to find other combinations of meds that have helped those with nHCM .

Again thanks
