New medications right before visit? Should I wait?

Hello,

I am scheduled to see a pulmonologist at Mayo Rochester on Oct 14. Normally a very healthy person but got a cough in March that ramped up progressively and ended with both lungs clogged with mucus plugs etc. no one can figure out what’s happening to my lungs so very grateful for my appt at Mayo. Now my question - the doctors here have been intentional about trying to get me off prednisone but at 5 mg my pulm function test showed I was going down. So the doctor recommended a biologic (duprixent). I can hold off on this until after Mayo so it doesn’t mess with blood tests - should I? Because I haven’t seen anyone yet there’s no way to send a message to pull to ask this question.

I had a similar question before I went to my first Mayo appointment in Rochester. I called the Pulmonary department ahead of time and they were very helpful. If you're going to Rochester their Pulmonary dept phone number is (507)284-2079. If you're headed to another Mayo site, just call the scheduling number and they will get you to pulmonary. Good luck!

Thank you! I called the number on my appt reminder and there wasn’t an option for ask a question. I’ll try the number above since I am going to Rochester.

Hi @lluth412, I added your question to the Lung Health and Asthma support groups as well. I agree with @jml6812 that you're best to ask about starting new meds by calling Mayo Clinic. Here's the number for Rochester's Central Appointment Office 507-538-3270.

Is this your first visit to Mayo? Have you downloaded the patient portal?

REPLY

Yes the is my first appointment and I’ve downloaded the app and read the patient information guide. I believe I am set on information except the med question and I have a call into the pulm dept this morning.

Thanks!
Lisa

My kidney surgery is Oct 14. I sent a note last week to the kidney team and asked about flu, RSV, Covid shots since this is when I usually get those. They said 'in the next week' would be ok, but nothing after. So, got my flu shot and will wait on the other 2 til after surgery.

I spoke to the nurse in pulmonology at Mayo Rochester yesterday and she said because they haven’t seen me yet they can’t tell me what to do about a new med. Which is fair. I spoke to my pulmonologist here and we’ve agreed to wait since my appt is only a few weeks out.

@gangcarotid1 Ill be sending you good vibes on Oct 14 for a successful surgery and easy recovery.
